Online community rallies
for island animals

PHILIPSBURG – Within a month, over US$1,000 has been raised for French Side Based Association Protectrice des Animaux (APA) by scores of members of the website www.traveltalkonline.com.
The fund raising efforts were done via the Internet. After a Today newspaper article about the plight of the organization, written by reporter Stanley Ejingiri, was posted on the online forum – Carol and Eric Hill, the owners of the website, made it a personal mission and started a funding drive to raise money for the APA.
“We have received cash, checks and credit cards so far in the amount of US$1,000 as of September 4!” announced Eric Hill, letting the readers know that the cutoff date was the tenth to send checks as they are coming down on holiday soon.
In the beginning they started with checks but soon diversified into credit card charges to make it easier for everyone and the money came rolling in. Many of the tourists plan to visit her when they come down next time on vacation.
“Sadly my doggies Abrand and Biki have passed on, but in their memory I put a check in today's mail I hope it helps! I've been buying cat food on the island and feeding strays at the Pelican for years - anything for the animals,” wrote Bette, from Bucks County, PA, who added she was especially missing her doggies that night.
The article in Today stated that over a hundred animals would lose their homes and end up back on the streets if the APA didn’t get quick help.
Lynne Coffin, the Founder and President of the Association said that in recent times, the cost of getting animals off the streets and giving them the attention they need increased so much that she had no choice but to consider closure if help does not come right away.
Over the years, the shelter has provided material and programs for schools and serves as a destination for field trips for students. It has been instrumental in placing over 300 dogs and cats in adoptive homes. Dog owners, who had no means of sterilizing their animals but wanted to, knew where to get assistance. The ASA is located on the road to Le Galion, near Orient Beach and close to the Butterfly Farm.
