We have heard from the owner of the apartment we rented for January in Orient Bay. It is a unit in Plaza Orient Bay. The owner says:

Accommodation has not suffered damage after the hurricane, you can easily keep your reservation.

Is anyone else renting there and have you heard a similar story?

WestJet has cancelled their flights, but thankfully we have already received a full refund. We will be booking air from another carrier.

Based on what we have read here, we should be able to find beer and chairs at Club O.

I am holding on to the hope that westjet will book flights once commercial airlines are given the green light to go.
We received full refund for our January flight but we still have accommodation booked that survived the hurricanes. They have a blog set up for info.

The beaches are still there, no? For grilled red snapper you need a 55 gallon drum cut in half lengthwise, and some charcoal, in addition to the fish.

Great investigation <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />...I still wouldn't eat anything coming out of those waters with all the crap floating around in there...to each his own

We go for 4 weeks usually. We spend most of those 4 weeks on the beach. Club O is already saying they are getting ready to rent chairs and serve beer.

If the restaurants aren't available (many seem to be reopening already or planning to reopen in the near future, though), we will eat more meals in our apartment.

We will be disappointed if the Dinghy Dock Bar at Oyster Pond hasn't been rebuilt, but we will still be there to support the businesses that are open.

That report may be 9 days old but everything stated is true, and will be for a long time. Yes, the beaches are there, but do you know what is floating or under water on those beaches? Think about the debris from all the surrounding islands that have been hit with these 2 monsters. I live on the coast of NJ and after Sandy the waters in the bay were loaded with cars, appliances, house decks, boats ,etc. and it was difficult to run a boat without hitting something unseen in the water way after a year later. And Sandy was no way near Irma or Maria!! Rebuilding is going to take more than a month or two. I realize everyone wants to get back to SXM to help with the economy but have you not understood what the residents are going through?? Most are still homeless!!

Also least not forget many of the accommodations will be taken up by the relief workers and those restaurants will be visited by the same. Soon they will be filled with construction workers. I spent several months in New Orleans starting days after Katrina hit and it was those workers that keep the hotels filled and the restaurants visited.... and a few drinks had. While we all want to get back I don't want to get in the way of the recovery.
