Booking a July charter on a Moorings 514PC soon. I’m told by my broker and note on the Moorings website there is a mandatory 3 hour “friendly captain” on the water practical checkout required with this boat. Does anyone know what this entails? Just want to know what to expect and brush up on if need be. Got me a little stressed. Did a week on the 433 power cat last year and it was a breeze. Also, it’s in the 3-5 year old level. Any good reason to upgrade to the newer 1-3 or o-1 level? Trying to save money, sleep aboard already insanely expensive.

I found your post interesting. I did an experimental booking to check cost and any additional requirements for a 514 PC. No additional requirements were mentioned. I started sailing with the Moorings in 1986 and we had a 474 PC for 10 days this May. Maybe you could contact the Moorings directly and ask them for more info. It doesn't sound right to me as you say you have experience on a similar boat. Good luck.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. We took out the Moorings 5800 (actually the first to take it out bareboat) and they had a friendly captain go with us. We were Moorings owners at the time and had taken out every other cat they had in the fleet. The process was very simple though, but also good we did it. We discovered the main winch wasn't working, so we actually came back in. I think they realized we were good after I initially took it out of the slip and also docked it when we came back in to fix the winch. So we just headed back out after, raised the sails, did one tack and that was it.

I imagine this is to protect themselves from those that have no business being at the helm. Likely they've probably made up there mind before you've even gone outside the marina.

Just checked again and it’s still there. Light blue almost hi lighted letters when you click on the picture of the yacht itself not the button that says select yacht. Only on the 514pc it seems. My broker mentioned it too when I contacted him for a rough quote. The 433 I was on last year was big but the 514 is much larger.

I’m not too worried unless I’m asked to plot courses on a paper chart, calculate tide ranges, current and arrival time! Definitely a little rusty. Maneuvering not a problem, leaving the dock I’m good there as well, returning maybe not. I can do it but planned to have them dock at the end of charter. I just feel why risk it after a week of not even a scratch. I’ve heard Marinemax won’t even allow bare boats to dock on return.

I’m sure being an owner with them and experience on a wide range of boats went a long way too. I think you have to really screw up for them to assign a captain for the week. It’s still a lot of pressure when everyone’s vacation hinges on you!

Look at it as "on the water orientation" to the yacht. Likely, they can decide a "pass" before getting out of harbor. "Slow is pro", going and coming.

And if you have been anchoring/mooring all week (or 2), without issue, why be so macho to dock in tight slip back at base and risk your deposit.

I did as Schwendy did and clicked on the boat. The message referred to comes up. The Moorings are calling it a "practical briefing", an on-the-water briefing. At the end they mention competence in handling the boat. Seems fair enough to me. That boat is too beautiful to let a credit card sailor mess with it. I'm sure Schwendy will do just fine and will appreciate the extra information that will be provided.

I imagine it isn't a significant process - maybe take it out, see how you leave the dock, pay attention when out there..etc. Maybe they skip it for some charterers as well if you've been with them before. Could be something they determine when going through the boat briefing as well. I recall the first (and only time actually) we did the chart briefing and was a bit shocked at the questions one guy was asking.. Have overheard some boat briefings at times and was somewhat shocked at questions asked then too...

I'm sure you'll be fine and it won't be a big deal. Good way to do a shake down of the boat too..

We did our first cat charter on a Moorings boat several years ago. The "friendly captain" accompanied us out to the SFD where we did a few tacks, then picked up a mooring ball at Peter Island. He was satisfied with our skill level and took the PI ferry back to Road Town. Not a big deal at all and gave us an opportunity to ask questions about transitioning from mono to cat.

Thank you all for making me feel more at ease about this! I was a docking champ back in the "day". Worked at a marina and my job was actually very similar to the check out staff but the "day" was a long, long time ago. When it's a year between charters, being on the water and moving up to a boat that has a 25' beam, and 7 other people spending thousands of dollars counting on you, creates a little anxiety. I do hope the check out capt. get's his own ride back or brings an extra dinghy. Definitely don't want to deal with more docking than necessary and time/fuel spent bringing him back to the base.

The don't think they will require you to dock the boat unless it's a end slip on the T. They will probably take it out also if it's a inner slip.

I seem to recall paying the checkout captain's fare back to Road Town and tipping him.

Yeah, as George said, if you do drop him/her off, it would likely be at the end of the dock. What we did on the 48 was have someone dinghy him in and we just hung around waiting..

We chartered a monohull from TMM in January, and upon returning to the base I spotted an easily accessible slip. When I headed for it, one of the staff waved me off and directed me to the slip where they actually wanted the boat, which was in a corner and very tight. He talked me through the process (a little reverse, wheel all the way to port, a little forward, etc.). My hands were pretty much an extension of his brain, and in the end we glided backwards perfectly into the narrow space between the finger and the next boat over. He was awesome!

Last charter (July 2016) we took the complimentary 4 hour captain with Moorings. Personally I think its a great offer to their customers and we use it as an extension of the checkout and extra time to learn the nuances of the boat etc. We sailed over to Deadman's had the crew practice anchoring, he showed them proper dinghy starting and handling then dropped him on the beach where he took the complimentary ferry back to the base. At the end of our charter we didn't even stop as we pulled in the Marina crew bopped out on a dinghy and one of them jumped on board while I set the lines and such. (43 mono)

Before I chartered my first cat years ago I watched a youtube video on how to dock one. Amazing what you can learn thru youtube! It wasn't long before I realized docking a cat is actually easier than docking a monohull. You have so much more control at slow speeds because of the twin engines.

Late to the party on this one and Schwendy, it sounds like you got your questions answered. If it helps, we did a 514PC charter last fall. Experienced boaters, but first time on a cat of any kind. Overall, it was one of the easiest boats I've ever operated – even being a 4X,000lb machine. 51' LOA and 25' beam is quite a sight picture from the helm, but you'll get used to it quickly. That you were comfortable with the 433PC, I'd say you have nothing (at all) to worry about on the 514. All the Moorings had us do was the boat briefing – no on-water checkout. Don't know if it was our resume or whether they gained confidence during the boat briefing, but we spent about two hours asking 1000 questions and getting familiar with systems...and off we went. You'll absolutely love the boat – so much room that 8 of us never felt on top of each other at all. It carries 260 gallons of fresh water in three tanks...with 8 of us taking Navy showers and being reasonable with usage, we refilled just once during the week – if that helps your planning. Since we were new to cats, one point I thought was interesting if fuel burn is important to you... We typically cruised at 2,000 RPM which yielded about 9.5kts and 7 GPH total, if I recall. Once away from docks and anchorages, cruising on one engine at that RPM brought the SOG back to 8-8.5kts. At that RPM, the boat was very economical to begin with and dropping the fuel burn (almost) in half while only losing about a knot is a great trade-off – again, if saving a little diesel matters to your group. P.S. The breaker for the windlass is under the galley sink :-) Feel free to DM me if I can share any other info. You'll have a great trip!

We are booked for July 27th for early start and pushing off the morning of the 28th between 9 and 10 on the 514PC. We chartered this 2 years ago and it is a beautiful boat and wonderful to command. As stated slow is pro. They now have a Captain go out with you if its your first time chartering the 514PC. It is no big deal, just an on the water check ride. You were on the 433 and said you had no problems. You will do the same with this boat. Handles like a dream and plenty of power to turn or spin the boat with the throttles. Dont stress over it and get some good tips from the Captain. Remember its free so a nice free personal private boating class. You only have to do it this one time. This is new this year and I think its because of past charters or and insurance requirement. As far as Chartering the 3-5 yr old is smart thing to do. We are doing the same and will contact 2 weeks prior to our charter for a free upgrade to a newer boat under the Captains Reward Program. If you have not signed up (Maybe automatic enrollment) contact them to check. You just have to had chartered with them in the past 5 years to be eligible. It also comes with a bunch of discounts at places around the islands. Do this now though so they can send you your Captain's Card to use while down there. I remember it took a little bit for them to send it to me. What dates are you looking at going? We picked the 28th because there is a big price drop starting that week. We usually charter at the end of May but had to push back to end of July due to schedules.

Cruising the local waters here in SC and GA. Love the BVIs and miss the Tradewinds!
