Been looking through posts for current updates on the condition of the beaches of Tortola, VG, and Jost and didn't see a lot. Is there a source/thread for that I'm missing? Wondering about beach damage (sand loss?), water quality (testing for pollutants from runoff?), and potential debris in the water. I know many properties/businesses were hit hard, were the beaches at Brewers, Smuggler's, Long Bay and CGB heavily impacted?

I saw a recent video that showed White Bay on Jost. The beach looked normal except for far less trees. The beach at CGB looked normal as well. But I also read there is hidden debris that can cut/hurt you. When we go to Anegada next month our plan is to not enter the water without shoes. Might be overkill, but would sure hate to get injured on Anegada. Could be a costly hospital visit.

Would definitely wear water shoes in the water off any beach due to the potential for debris...

Hopefully others there can provide updates on the beaches as they are available...

" water quality (testing for pollutants from runoff?)"

Considering sewage treatment facilities, when actually working, are minimal at best, you can imagine how well they function without power.

A group was coordinating divers to recover materials out of CGB.

Water shoes at minimum and I'd be a bit more cautious when swells are up and moving a lot of sand.

Just ran across this on FB a few minutes after posting. "There is a huge environmental issue on the beaches with a lot of debris under a layer of sand."

I would be concerned about debris in the water and under the sand on the Tortola beaches but less so the Anegada beaches. The relative scarcity of buildings on the north shore of Anegada means less debris compared to Tortola.

Along the same lines as beach updates, I'd be curious on sea-floor changes that might render our familiar approaches to anchorages no longer viable. For example, the marked channel into White Bay JVD, or the channel into Anegada.

I think a lot of sand may have moved. It won't take long to find the low spots as charter companies reopen.

Good point!

Anegada was pretty tight for the Jeanneau 479 before...

Sandy Spit is barely visible, but the reef on the east and south sides is still there.

Hi George-

LOL yes but preferably not the hard way!! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Wink.gif" alt="" />

And great to see you here! I've been meaning to drop you an email. I've been working a lot of STT...heartbreaking at first but seeing much improvement!

Cheers!

Dave

I saw on Facebook that the Top of The Baths is open.
Also saw that the trail from The Baths to Devil's Bay has had some damage (damage to the stairs in a couple of spots) which makes the trip a big harder.

Not to compare the BVI to the USVI, I just see progress being made on the clean-up of beaches and debris underwater on STT along with water quality testing being done. Just curious if this is happening on Tortola, VG, and Jost yet, or what the conditions are like? I know these islands were devastated and just wondering where they are as far as beach safety for residents and visitors. Hoping Smuggler's and the other north shore beaches are ok...

We were at the Baths Nov. 9th. If interested, you can see some observations regarding the state of the Baths on my boat's facebook page @SVDreammachine. Look for the Nov. 16th post which you can also find by following this link:

Reading CGB beach is closed for swimming due to contamination, any updates on that or other beach water testing?
