Daily Herald linkI was surprised to read also that the owner of the hotel has purchased Layla's and Mai Tai beach. Would be interested in checking out Layla's, since Dreams is gone.

Layla's is also gone. Seems the hotel has bought the property. There is nothing of Layla's left except kitchen and bathrooms, with no roof. All the trees are gone too. And today there is a bashed up airplane in the middle of the property.
Our favorite place on the island, so terribly sad.

Did I understand correctly that Mercure has actually purchased those beaches as well as the Layla and Mai Tai abutting properties? What happened, once again, to all BEACHES being public?

They CANNOT purchase the beach! Just the property the restaurants were on. All beaches are public.

That’s what I thought but reading the news article I wondered if something had changed, particularly on the French side. Thanks for the clarification.

Elaine--I understood from the article that they are going to do lots of upgrades at Layla's.

Since it's an empty lot, there's only one way to go, up!

Mercure is going to open Layla's by Dec 2018 according to the published article. I imagine it will be open to the public like most restaurants owned by hotels. Interesting to see what will actually happen as time progresses. They have been very active in getting the hotel open for tourists again so that is encouraging.
