This winter rather than endure the hassle of air travel, we decided to drive to a warm weather site in the U. S. instead of our usual Christmas – New Year’s trip to St. Martin. After much looking at the weather records and trends, we chose Key West, Florida. The weather did not disappoint. Had we stayed in Miami or further north, there were several days of chilly weather when a cold front moved through.

Our usual winter vacation is to Club Orient on French St. Martin. Club O is a clothing optional resort on Orient Bay. The most logical choice for Key West was the Déjà Vu Resort. We were concerned about some reports that we had read that indicated that the resort itself was “run down.” But since it was the only clothes optional resort in the keys we decided to chance it.

We were not disappointed! Déjà Vu is a collection of older buildings that form a private courtyard. The age of the buildings is typical of the Keys and Key West guesthouses in general. The rooms are spacious with modern fixtures and furnishings. The mattress in our King room was in excellent shape. There are only 27 rooms in the resort. Maid service is daily.

The resort is not on a beach but has a good size Jacuzzi (14+ people capacity) and a decent sized heated swimming pool. The Jacuzzi and Pool are open 24 hours a day. Both the spa and pool were kept clean. There is also a sauna. Clothing is optional inside the resort, and everyone with a few exceptions was either nude or topless.

While there are no in room refrigerators, there is a large shared refrigerator in the patio dining area. Guests keep their items in paper bags marked with their name/room number. There is no restaurant or bar on premises, but there is a drink machine and continental breakfast served in the morning (extra cost). There is a gas grill and an ice machine.

There is a lot of landscaping, which while pretty, reduces the sun that strikes the courtyard area during the winter months. There is a decent sized deck for the second floor rooms that was perfect for sunning. It was just outside our door and offered full sun from noon until 3:30 PM. In some ways that was better than all day, as we weren’t tempted to “over do it.” I had enough tan left from summer that there was no real danger of serious burns for me, but my wife never tans, just burns, so is constantly coated with high SPF lotion.

There are many restaurants in the immediate vicinity of Déjà Vu. Denny’s is a fair place for breakfast and is only a block away. Across the street from the resort is Duffy’s, a very nice but reasonable place for lunch and dinner.

Overall, we enjoyed the resort as did everyone we talked to. How did it compare to Club Orient? Well it’s just different. We like having the beach, but after this trip, we wish Club Orient had a Jacuzzi and pool. They are both great places.

On the down side, this will likely be our last trip to Déjà Vu as the hotel itself has been sold and no one knows what will happen next. It make become a standard guesthouse or it may remain CO. The management of Déjà Vu will keep the name and are presently looking for land further north, perhaps Miami or Fort Lauderdale. In any event the resort closes on March 30, 2003. If you are interested in staying there, you must do so soon.
