We were tied up to a mooring ball at Carlos Rosarion beach moorings on Culebra at 3.30 this afternoon, when we heard a huge explosion and saw smoke rising over Cayo Del Agua.

My wife managed to snap the attached picture.

Anyone have any idea what this was?

It could be unexploded ordinance from when they used Culebra for military maneuvers.

Sail 445,
Correct. We were there over Thanksgiving week, and there were at least two sites being excavated. The one you photographed is likely the one we saw while diving off Carlos Rosario, The other was off the northwest corner of Culebrita on a Cayo the locals call Flat Top. We watched them, daily from our veranda on Zoni. We saw no explosions or smoke, but there were several work boats tied up about 100 yards offshore and they had several orange E-Z Up canopies for shade.
