I previously had the original shot years ago. Now they say you need the new one with a follow up one in 2 to 6 months. Had the first one today along with my second pneumonia follow up shot. Found out if you get the shingles shot at a Drs office insurance doesn't cover it but at a pharmacy my plan B does.

I need to check with my doctor. I got the 'old' shot last year. Need to see if it's too soon to get the new one. My insurance pays at a pharmacy but not doctor's office, also.

My wife had the first shingle vaccination and has had two mild cases of shingles since. Supposedly it was only about 50% effective but perhaps lessened the symptoms when she did get shingles. She and the doctor are not sold on her getting the new one, at least not yet.

Sorry to hear that. I have friends that had shingles and they were miserable. I had a slight reaction to this shot with chills and fatigue. Might have been due to getting the second of the pneumonia shot at the same time yesterday. Both my arms are very sore today.

Both of her cases were very mild with minimal discomfort. The doctor had medication started early and he also believes the vaccine lessened the impact.

I also had two mild cases (one just prior to and during a trip to SXM), got on medication right way and also had minimal discomfort but I also have a pretty high pain tolerance. No vaccines for me.

I personally know several people who had severe cases with extreme pain and discomfort.

Eric had a very severe case of the shingles, partially because he didn't know what it was and didn't get treated for quite a while. He thought it was poison ivy or something and ended up finally going to the ER because the pain was so severe.

I still feel under the weather this morning. Not looking forward to the second shot.

I never have more than one shot at the same time, as I worry about interactions between shots. My totally uneducated opinion is that you might be having that kind of a reaction.

I think you hit the nail on its head. Never doing two at the same time again.

The time I had my shingles shot, the pharmacist asked me about doing the flu shot at the same time and I declined. He said there would be no interaction between them, but I didn't want to take the chance. Sorry you had this happen.

Just talked to the pharmacist. My discomfort isn't coming from the shingles shot but from the second of the pneumonia series. First shot has 13 antigens and the second has 23 which some overlap to the ones that already set up shop so to speak. That is what is going on. Said it was common and nothing to worry about. Easy for them to say.

Talked to a triage nurse yesterday to see what to do. Said these are common reactions to the second pneumonia shot and not a result of the shingles shot. If it's not better by today I need to go to urgent care. Headach and fever finally went away this morning but arm is still red and sore. Glad I don't need another one of these.

I'd gladly trade you. We are expecting more tomorrow and Monday with close to another foot before end of next week. And no warmth to melt it.

You seem to be a very intelligent man. Why are you shoveling snow?? I am serious, worked in an emergency room years ago and cannot tell you how many heart attack victims we treated. And age is really not a factor. Please be careful, I know men have that ego that they can do anything but your heart will tell you different. There is a town in NJ that has warning on their snow shovels. Scubaman, BE careful. People do care.

Thanks for the concern. Believe me. I didn't shovel for very long. Just enough to clear a path to my truck in the driveway in case we needed it for an emergency along with the short walkway to our porch.

Went to the Dr today as my arm was still sore. Said no infection but it is still irritated and will take time to remedy itself. Was definitely a allergic reaction to the 2nd pneumonia shot and nothing to do with the shingles shot. Seen it happen before due to the 2nd shot. Have to use heat/ice and Tylenol 4 times a day till it subsides.

This is why I do not do flu, shingles or any other vaccine. And, they involve needles!

I tell you. Even though that 2nd pneumonia shot was a bummer for me, it is a minor trade off for viral pneumonia which can be a killer at my age or younger ones too. Glad I'm doing the shingles series for those same reasons. I don't do the flu shot. I do single malt instead.

Wife and I just got our second of the shingles shot yesterday. Arms are still sore but worth it to avoid shingles.

Just got my second Shingrix shot yesterday. Bit of a sore arm but knew that from the first shot. Then I woke up in the middle of the night with unbelievable shakes. Seemed like it went on for an hour but the clock said maybe 10 minutes. Looked it up today and one of the known side effects to the vaccine is "shivering". Hmmmmm, that seems like too mild of a word.............but all is well now and since I've had both Shingrix shots and Zostavax a few years ago, I hopefully won't get shingles!

Seems like a bit of overkill since I've never even had chicken pox, but when I got the CP vaccine there wasn't any definitive answer to my question if since it was a live vaccine I would now have the possibility of getting shingles. I am erroring on the side of caution, shingles is something I do NOT want to deal with if at all possible!

Huh, I always thought you couldn't get shingles if you hadn't had chickenpox. I need to look about getting the two part shot, I guess. Had Zostavax, but 'they say' it's not always effective. Eric had shingles several years ago and it was unbelievably painful for him.

Yes Carol that is true, you cannot get Shingles if you haven't had Chicken Pox. The virus lies in wait at the base of your nerves to potentially return as Shingles at a later date.

But since the Chicken Pox vaccine is a LIVE vaccine, the current thinking is that there may be enough virus left in your body to in fact make shingles a possibility. Less likely than someone who has had chicken pox and probably not as severe, but like I said, I'm going to err on the side of caution!

OK, I'm thinking you must be considerably younger than I am, as I don't think there was such a thing as a chicken pox vaccine, before I got it!! laugh

Nope, I just never had chicken pox as a kid, I got vaccinated as an adult.

Get it Carol. Not worth the risk. I had the original shot and as you know got the 2 shot one too. My reaction was all from the 2nd Pneumonia shot I got the same time.

OK, I remembered you had a reaction to something. I was thinking it was the shingles shot. The pharmacist wanted to give me a shingles shot and flu shot at the same time, and I declined. Didn't seem wise.

Good call. I had my 1st shingles shot same time I had the 2nd pneumonia shot of the series which was a mistake to do. 2nd Pneumonia shot gave me the reaction and I feel having both done same time wasn't a wise choice. Had no reaction to the 2nd shingles except a sore arm for a few days.
