Could anyone give me an update on the status of the Sapphire beach resort? It is coming up on an RCI exchange for the first week of July. Has anyone stayed here recently or in the past? How is it as a place to stay?

Do yourself a favor...look elsewhere. Sapphire for the most part has been a pit for years. It is the only resort on SXM that LOST its RCI accredadation a while back, but somehow managed to get it back. There are much nicer places to stay.

We are owners there and actually stayed there for three weeks this past January, this was before the new elevators were installed. We found conditions there better than they have been in years. There have been many positive reviews in the past few months as owners are once again returning. If you are looking for a place to crash at night while you explore the island or visit your favorite beach it should be fine. The area itself has a lot to offer with several good restaurants in Porto Cupocoy and several more in Jordan Village, both areas are walking distance. We have owned there since 2000 and as Ed has stated it had some issues in the past, the new GM circa 2016 has made a significant difference. Yes there are nicer places but it was fine for us. We also own at La Vista Beach and they used to be miles apart, while La Vista is still better the gap is significantly less.

I was there a week ago visiting some friends. The pool area and grounds are lovely; the lobby area is clean and comfortably furnished. There was at least one elevator working in each of the 3 buildings and there were pople working everywhere. I wholeheartedly agree with the previous poster.

Spent week of 4/6-13/2019 in terre base and drove by Saphire many times..... Did see some work being done. As is all the buildings in the area , facades are a mess from hurricane... shocked at devastation of Ocean Club.

Most of us are interested in what is going on now and in the future, not the past. The owner passed away just before the hurricane and his son Phillippe Verdier is in charge now. He is working tirelessly to make Sapphire what it was when it opened. There is a new manager with extensive resort experience who is doing an excellent job. When we were there in 2/19 the rooms that were renovated were beautiful with new appliances and furniture. As mentioned, the pool area and bar are immaculate and well maintained. They have a way to go but are definitely going in the right direction. The location near Porto Cupecoy ( great restaurants and market) and proximity to Maho, which is being rebuilt as most know, will make this one of the most desirable places on the island. They will get their RCI certification soon. When we stay in our villa, you can practically reach out and touch the ocean while cooling off in the dipping pool. You can hear the ocean waves at night. I am not aware of another place to stay closer to the water. I am glad we kept our timeshares and are looking forward to going back next year. 34 years visiting SXM and can't get enough.
