Jan.15: St. Vincent
It was a nice night for sleeping onboard the cool breeze blowing down from the mountains kept the cabins comfortable; upon waking the peak of Petit Piton was glowing in the reflective light of the sunrise. We headed off for St. Vincent, it would be a long day of sailing since we were going to young Island cut in the south of the island. The winds were light so we got to try out Skyelarks new deep running asymmetrical sail, it performed very well in the light air; it is beautifully patterned featuring the colors of the Union Jack, inspired by the 2012 Olympic spirit . Once we were well in the lee of the island the wind dropped and we had to motor sail for the last part of the passage. We took a mooring ball which is necessary here due to the strong current that runs through the cut.

Boats anchored off Young Island

Once the boat was settled in we took the dingy over to the other side of Young Island for some snorkeling. The water is gin clear and we saw a variety of fish, sponges, and corals; the area is well protected and a slight current flows through allowing you to just drift along slowly enjoying the sea life. Once back on board it was off to The French Veranda for a sundowner and wifi, a necessity these days it seems.

Always beautiful

The bar and restaurant are finely decorated and more upscale then the other establishments along the seaside walkway, the drinks were reasonably priced and included some exotic concoctions. I phoned Dan when we were ready to be picked up, we met him at the dock for our dingy ride back to the boat. Dinner onboard was a real feast featuring steaks from the whole beef tenderloin I brought along for the trip, served with potato au gratin and green bean salad; Dan also prepared some kingfish baked with red bell pepper, capers, tomato and cheese for those that don’t eat red meat. It was a long day so after some rums in the cockpit everyone headed off for bed.
