Looking for recommendations for ASA Instructors for ASA 103, 104, 114 courses in BVI.

I am wanting my son (and wife?) to obtain their ASA certifications on our cat, Sea Tiger.

I don't have an answer to your question but was wondering if it was you or a charter customer that was out the last week in May? We were on an adjacent ball at Anegada on maybe May 30 or so. There were 4-5 kids aboard Sea Tiger and then another boat on the opposite side of us with about the same amount of kids. That evening, there was a fierce Fortnight dance off between the kids on the two boats. It was hilarious.

Once upon a time I was certified to teach all those, but not anymore. I don't think the certification is necessary, but the education is good. Many skippers in BVI can teach you what you need to know. The biggest item and hardest item is confidence. I would suggest that you not be aboard when they are being taught or be below. I do not know you or your family, but my previous experience would be that they would not want you to see them screw up as you can probably do it effortlessly. We all screw up with practice docking or tacking, it is all part of the process. How you recover is the important part. Sorry I don't have any current recommendations of who to hire, but I have known Julian for years and he is very good, he was the 2nd best skipper in the islands :>

Thinking about this, what is the reason you want them to have the certification? Is your wife going to sail without you take her friends or as a safety backup if you were incapacitated. No idea of age of son, but I assume you want him to be able to take his friends on a trip without you.

My wife and I received our ASA103 certification from Malcolm Herman last week while aboard a chartered mono. I thought he was really good, it was a great experience. PM if you would like his email and phone number.

Folkert aka "Dutch" was the instructor that my wife and I had for our US Sailing certifications through Colgate Offshore Sailing. He was great. I have seen him a couple of other times since in the BVI. I think with The Moorings.

Paul Sullivan with Blackrock Sailing School. He is usually out of CYOA but may be for hire on other charter. He's very knowledgeable of the islands and fantastic instructor.

Thanks

My son is 24. I will not be with them. Also, have had inquiries from others, thus my question to the "advisory board"

Hi,
I had a boat with TMM for several years. At the time we started with TMM about 15 years ago Simon Wood was their ASA skipper. We hooked up with Simon for a few days then and continues to be one of our best friends. A friend of ours back home and took the entire asa course with him. He now runs high speed Rib trips out of Tortola and rents them. As a favor he looks after our Glacier Bay power boat that is on a trailer in a lot with his big ribs behind Nanny Cay. We were out with him a day last week and as usual had a blast. No matter how long it’s been since seeing Simon and his lovely wife who works in Roadtown booking mega yachts through the world, it’s as though it was yesterday and we are next door neighbors.

I don’t know if he would be interested or not. I’m sure it would have to be in the fall when he could get away. If he will, they will learn a lot, indeed even with considerable experience you likely will as well. He knows every nook and cranny in these islands above and below the water. He lives and preaches safety. He’s as good a seaman as you will find and one whole lot of fun with his dry Brit wit.

Here’s a link to his business
