https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/16/asia...cruise-us-evacuation-intl-hnk/index.html

This thing is starting to unravel. 70 more infections announced Sunday for a total of 356 cases found onboard.

If they haven't tested everybody previously, how do they know they aren’t getting sick by staying on the ship? Also, reportedly, 1000 crew have not been in quarantine and have been eating together without out masks and such. Are these the same people making/delivering meals, doing laundry?

For those that choose the evacuation flight they will get on the plane untested with other untested’s fly in close quarters for over 10 hours and spend 14 days stateside in quarantine. Sounds like a good way for a “clean” person to get sick enroute. And will couples and families be split up with already sick folks staying in Japan to hopefully recover alone.

For those refusing the flights home, after getting to within 5 days of “release” from quarantine and being able to travel, they are being told they will be tested on the 18th with results on the 21st and will be held in quarantine another 14 days Before onward travel to US. What started as a two week cruise will then be 1.5 months. Hopefully all are retirees or have nice employers. Somebody is missing a family birth or funeral with this ordeal.

Does travel insurance cover or is there an option to cover loss of income while in foreign quarantine?

I think it is clear now, these people should have been taken off to proper isolation quarantine facilities ashore and have whatever incubation clock started.

I think that US officials are pretty sure that there are now more infections happening on ship, from people re-infecting each other, OR, as you say, from the crew infecting them. The crew have not been quarantined from each other at ALL, and are still fixing food and delivering it to the passengers. Horrible situation. I guess I still don't understand why people can't actually be TESTED before you put them on the planes to come home. I agree that some people will probably get infected on the plane on the way home, but at this point, you almost have to take that chance, if you're on the ship, as it is not safe to stay on the ship, it seems pretty obvious to me. I think travel insurance would probably pay for the health needs of those who have been diagnosed and are in hospital, but no travel insurance that I am aware of covers loss of income.

Yes, the testi g thing is mind boggling. I think this will go down as a lesson learned that a ship, although quite clean on a daily basis, is no equal to a purpose built quarantine facility.

Well, they made it to the USA. Some tested positive and they were out in isolation chambers aboard these 747 cargo jets.

May the quarantine pass quickly and they all recover.

Will be interesting to watch those still on the ship; Pax and crew and how the ahip recovers from this.

How long until this ship makes another revenue cruise. Id like a deep discount in the may timeframe to help them get back to normal.

Frankly, I think the few who decided to stay behind are very foolish. The numbers of new cases seem to be going up every day. And it appears that, regardless of when they come home, they will still have to undergo 14 days quarantine. I think it's pretty obvious the disease is being transmitted on the ship. That's basically what the US officials said. I guess that's really not clear is what happens at this point, as far as the Japanese authorities are concerned. What happens to people once they leave the ship, if they are not being evacuated, as the Americans were?? Smith seems to think that he will just be able to walk off the ship soon, out in the population, and I really doubt that will happen. And regardless, he will be put on a 'no fly' list by the US and his passport will be flagged, so he won't be let in the country. Very foolish.

Agree. It will be awhile before we really know what this bug is and how it operates. Is it just a new “flu” we will have to deal with annually and maybe get a shot?

It seems like it is easy to spread and perhaps what they are calling “super spreaders” might have a big function in asymptomatically spreading ut to everyone at work, the subway, restaurant, etc.

I suppose they should try to keep the jeanie in a bottle as best they can.

I was very little, but I remember my talking mom about how my pediatrician was on a hospital ship in the 50s or 60s off Asia and was always dealing with weird germs and he always cultured all of us kids whenever we went in sick. After the culture came back, he called in the prescription.

I think it wiuld be wise to see this as routine again.

Wow, video posted from a Japanese doctor who is an infectious disease specialist. It seems like everyone will soon be infected on the ship, which is now up to 542 positive tests. And most of the ship hasn't even been tested yet, or at least, no test results back yet.

Wow, crazy. Looks like a massive bad judgment to say “stay in your rooms” while no one outside the rooms is observing a real quarantine like he says there was no red or green zone and no way to know where the virus was to take precautions. Well, this should resrite the book on how to deal with this in the future. Aside from just getting people off j to better facilities perhaps they do need to draft procedures if thsi were to happen at sea. How do you deal with it.

Yes, maybe this will result in much better containment of things like Noro, which is much more common, as of now, anyway.
