While on sxm currently, I feel that my social security number was stolen. Any suggestion as to what I can do?

I would first contact the Social Security Administration. SSA CONTACT

Just curious as to what makes you feel the number was stolen?

If it's because of a phone call you got from "social security" it's just a scam.

Drink all day at home, your friends worry about you; do it on vacation and they say "what a good time you're having". Save your friends needless worry, travel more!

Correct, and that is why I asked.

I got a phone call a couple of weeks ago, and the person said that my "social" was going to be suspended because of fraudulent activity. I thought, OK, that's weird, and I hung up. laugh

cvo--please do post why you think your social was compromised.

Lol! Yes, the "sheriff" called me to tell me my social security number was compromised and that it was closed....ha ha! How the F do you close a social security number? And the SHERIFF?!

Also, the IRS is coming to arrest me.

I would be very curious as to how a SS# would get compromised in SXM. Even when buying TS it was not provided. There isn't anything or any purpose for someone to ask for it, unless it's maybe a real estate purchase? Even then,.......

Unless the person had a wallet/purse stolen that had the SS card, I really know of no other way unless it was willingly given out, which I doubt.

Sadly, many fall for the scam/fraudulent calls whether it is this, a computer issue, etc. I have received 2-3 calls for the SS scam myself.

When I get those calls I just act as alarmed as I can and ask a lot of questions keeping them on the line as long as I can. I offer to send money and then I tell them someone is at my door and ask if they can call me back at a different number. It's 1-555- F***y** then hang up.

I can't imagine how they would get your SS number unless you gave it to them.

There was a news report a couple weeks ago about a massive security breach in a government contractors’ so-called “secure” data storage facility. Millions of records which contained name, address, SSN, and phone numbers were hacked.

US Government warnings about this breach tell us to hang up immediately and that the Government does NOT call individuals to demand immediate “action or else” EVER!

Hang up and ignore the thieving glassbowls.

Man you have too much time on your hands! Talking to them? I don’t even answer my phone if I don’t recognize the number or the name on a call display. If it is important- they will leave a message. They usually don’t. And you know what else? I don’t get these stupid calls nearly as much as I did before I stopped answering. Maybe a couple a month now versus a half a dozen a day before!

I got the same call last week. First I did not answer the call then I blocked the number.

Agreed. I have basically stopped answering my cell phone unless I recognize the number. I still get probably one a day, when before it was 3 or 4 a day. My brother in law has installed some kind of a blocker on his home phone that he has to put your phone number into the program in order for the phone to even RING. I thought that was a little excessive at the time, but maybe not!

Oh well, at least we were able to help OP through this website! We have our land line set up to answer after 2 rings, so the scams rarely get to us. I HAVE had some fun with some of them! They get mad when I ask them if their spouse or children know what they do for a living!!!!!

Remember the IRS or the SS will never call you they notify you by official mail.

Its to easy to say things are always scam . Last year I got a a letter from card member services of fargo North Dakota saying they think a credit card was fraudulently opened in my name and i should call to discuss. I assumed a fraud and i am not going to call and give my info . I did run a free credit report (trans union ) and no new account showed up. I thought okay a scam but 3 months later my FICO began to drop I ran another credit report (experian) and the account showed up . It took a lot of phone calls and, letters but I was able to finally clear things up. I put a security freeze on all 3 credit companys and now subscribe to life lock

If in fact you know it was comprised by theft of a purse or other personal item, as suggested by someone here, check your homeowners insurance carrier. Many policies now have identity theft coverage that provide you with a number to call for expert advise regarding these type issues. It will not be a claim and has no deductible. It’s just a business your company contracts with to support you with these type issues. If it was a call as also suggested your phone may have a option to not ring if the number is not recognized in your contacts. Then they must leave a VM. Anyone that needs to talk to you will leave VM. If you answer the phone for these type calls you are going to get an increased volume of them as others have pointed out.

Our home phone has a screening feature where the caller has to state his or her name unless their number is in our contact list. If they don't, then the phone doesn't even ring on our side, nor does it go to the answering machine. That has eliminated 100% of the robocalls on that phone. We get several "missed calls" each day, but the phone never rings. It's a great feature.

We have a similar feature on our land line and shows the number on our TV but doesn't ring.

I question even keeping my landline. I remember 2 times in the past year when someone who I know called, but there may have been more. I would just turn off the ringer and check the messages every few days, but mine is not the sole choice.

I'm going to move to SC next year, probably to Hilton Head. I've already signed up for a Google Voice number with an HH area code, and will have VistaPrint print me cards (Yes, I'm old-fashioned) with the HH number. 'Course the new Cable/Internet/Voice and maybe Wireless deal will guide me...

In regards to my SS number, yes "someone" calls about that every week or so. I also get screeds in Chinese (the manager in my local Chinese restaurant laughs at them), and numerous "credit" calls. I'm not sure that I even want a landline. My mobile carrier has provided tools which minimize the SPAM to my mobile. I like minimize.

Only reason we have a landline is it's in our Xfinity package and if we took it off our bill would be higher. Makes no sense but that's the way it is.

If you lose power a landline will always work. Good for backup if you haven't or can't charge a wireless.

We haven't had a home phone in years. We use only cell phones. The blocker is standard on iphone now and it works perfectly. My phone only rings for numbers that are in my connections. Unknown calls go straight to voicemail. The message are hilarious--threatened with arrest, SS#cancelled, big refunds if I call and cancel my contract and etc.

Anyway, the blocker programs work great.

RonDon--you can always charge your cell in your car. Our 'home' phone is a cell, much cheaper than a land line.

When we lived in CT there was no cell coverage within a 10 mile radius. Our land line was our link to the world if power went out. Didn't give it up until we sold the house.

Almost two years ago our area of CT experienced an extremely severe microburst which is apparently a wind storm just shy of tornado magnitude. Beyond trees and other less important things, we lost all services - electricity, cell phones, internet - all the things we so typically take for granted and think we can’tive without. The only thing that remained working throughout the almost two week period was our personal land line. Needless to say, I won’t be giving it up anytime soon.

Respectfully,

pat

Only if you have a conventional direct land line plugin. In most cases a portable land line will not connect with a power outage.

OK, I am going to move this to the People Talk section now, as it really has nothing to do with SXM..

Go to: Settings>phone>silence unknown callers. I use it on iPhone 8 and X.

I suspect they probably got a robo call with an accent and thought it was from someone on St Maarten.
