Arrived in tortolla Christmas day five hours late because the pilot failed to show in San Juan. Never heard of that one! Sunsail picked us up and wisked us to our 47ft sloop. Everyting was in order and very friendly and helpful. Next day had short briefing and left for Norman island and got a mooring ball and spent the night at Willy T's We had four twenty somethings and us old parents. By the way we provisoned at bobbys. They were great even though our plane was late they kept the food on ice and delivered the perishables in fifteen mintues of calling. Left norman island headed for the baths but went to Savannah cove instead on the way to the Bitter end. Had a nice swim and noticed a big storm coming. Got out in open water and got slammed by rain and wind gusts to 40 or more. Visibility went down to 100 yards for 60 mintues or so and saw a large sailboat circleing so I called him and told him I would stay on his tail till weather broke he had radar. Two hours later headed for Bitter end and got a slip for the night. Dinner was not very good and expensive. Next day we we suppose to go to Anegada, but winds were over 30 and seas running high. I spoke to a mega yacht captain and he advised me not to go because of the north swell when I got there. We decided to cancel Anegada and went to Marina Cay Great sail there and took up anchorage behind the island. Winds were crazy and we were awake all night with the anchor noise. Barely got any sleep. After a short visit to we headed out Pocmoke pass under motor. The winds were over thirty and seas running 12 feet or more. I have been in bigger seas but not in a strange boat and so close to rocks. The baot had a strong motor and after a few monstrous waves that put the bow two feet under green water we were headed to JVD under sail. Single reef in the main and furled jib. Beautiful day winds over thirty we hit 11.4 on the KM. Thats the fastest I have ever gone. After passing SAndy Cay we went in Great Harbour and set a hook close in. boats were already there for New Years. Winds were howeliing and we set a second hook. If I had not had three strong boys I would not have been able top do it. We dragged anchor in the middle of the night and had to move. What a horror in the dark in a crowded harbor. The second anchor was all wrapped around the first. Boys had to get dinghy to unravel. Reset the anchors and went back to sleep. Next two days stayed there wanting our good spot for new years. Went to White bay by cab and dinghy. That place was great kids loved it. Had a few painkillers at Soggy Dollar. News Years was interesting at Foxy's, but not as wild as I had heard. Some dinghys were stolen. Glad I locked mine/ But had a problem unlocking new brass marine lock after it had been in surf a few hours got sand in it. Recommend heavy dose of oil and put lock in baggy if in water. Left JVD newyears day and wetn thru Great Thatch and stopped at Sopers hole for lunch. Pussers has the worst service in the Island. Ample Hamber had fresh baked bread that made my day. We bought four loaves. SAile the south side of Tortolla for the nest five hours and got into dock just before sunset. Lessons I learned from my second BVI charter. I will never bring any beverages ont plane again except wine. WE bought too much food . Rough weater prevented us from making food underway. Too tired at anchorages to cook. Bring less clothes. I did not bring foul weather gear like last year and should at least bring good jackets. Bring lots of batteries and flashlights. I brought my own gps and hand held vhf a must. conserve water kids used it all up. Sunsail was great. Had a few problems they fixed very quickly. Ask for Steve at the Docks. They better never let him go. VAcations are a lot of work!!!
