That is kinda bass akwards....shouldn't the refund be a given if THEY cancel your flight? One would think so but perhaps the laws are different in Canada?

Yes, from my understanding, it is a US FAA rule that airlines must refund the price on any flights they cancel. FAA rules do not apply to flights which do not go through the US.

Yes, from my understanding, it is a US FAA rule that airlines must refund the price on any flights they cancel. FAA rules do not apply to flights which do not go through the US. This is for the US ONLY but this is the DOT policy on refunds for cancelled flights. CANCELLED US FLIGHT REFUNDS

And below is the Canada version. It gets a little confusing with regard to situations/cancellations and what is within the control of the airline and what is not. CANADA TRANSPORTATIONThis was "modified" 2019-12-09 but I could not find anything newer.
