Thirty years ago (my how time flies) my wife and I spent our honeymoon at Sam Lord’s Castle. One of the bungalows on the rocks. Hard to believe the place got torched. It’s sad looking at you-tube videos of the place just before the fire and then a couple year afterwards. So tragic! Anyone know if anything is happening with the site yet? Glad I have great memories of Sam Lord’s in it’s elegance. Such a loss!

So glad that you not only selected Sam Lords but Barbados to spend your honeymoon. It was a place of true beauty and art, not sure if you remember all of the interior roof designs and art work in the main building but it was something that will live in my memory until my grave.

Unfortunately I can find nothing concrete that I can share with you, however there are ongoing negotiations for the sale of this property. It is rumoured that a large international chain of hotels are in the final stages of acquiring the property (maybe completed).

I hope and pray that this will become a reality within my lifetime as this is a paradise, within a paradise and I would love to stay-cation here again one day.

It was indeed a place of beauty. Quite by chance one late morning we were walking into the main building and San Lord's Castle was sponsoring the Barbados Miss Universe Pageant to select the Barbados Contestant. We were asked to be two of the judges. It was an honor, fun, interesting plus as a judge, we had a free lunch. Truly a shame someone torched the place.

Oh so you are partially to blame for the poor representatives that we have sent to Miss Universe in the past...LOL <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" />

On a serious note, Sam Lords was destroyed a while before the fire. It was purchased years ago and the then owners allowed it to run into a state of disrepair.

Prior to the fire, vandals used to frequent (some illegally living) there, they destroyed many of the roof designs and infrastructure, the fire just took care of the rest.

Since my last reply, I have done a little research and found out that it is the Barbados Government who is in the process of purchasing it from the past owners.

It is my understanding that after the purchase is completed, the property will be leased to an unnamed large international chain of resorts. Hopefully this deal will be completed soon, as our island could greatly use the injection of the foreign exchange and international promotions that this <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> partnership would bring.

With all of that being said, there are so many positive reasons that you should come back to our beautiful island...maybe it's time that you schedule a visit to renew your vows <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/circle.gif" alt="" /> ... As you stayed and loved "Old Sam Lords" and as I am in an ASSumimg mood, I believe that...

1. You seem to like to be away from the usual hustle & bustle of the heavily populated tourist areas.

2. You more than likely are a person that likes their independence and will have a rental car while on vacation.

Based on these ASSumptions, I would like to suggest you have a look at the Crane Resort http://www.thecrane.com This is a magnificent property that I have staycationed at a few times and I am sure that this resort will completely satisfy you and will be the perfect place to fall in love all over again at <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Clapping.gif" alt="" /> something that we all need from time to time <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" />.

A little off the main subject here but.......

Too many years ago we stayed at the original Crane Beach Hotel. It was one of the most dramatic hotel locations on all of the Barbados we, as visitors, were able to find.

I will admit the rooms were not up to the expectations of someone looking for a 'Four Seasons' type resort but for us it was drop dead perfect. We had an incredibly huge two bedroom, two bath suite up the staircase on the second floor with a terrace where we might have hosted a cocktail party for fifty people had we been of a mind to, (we weren't!) and the best part of our suite were the views from same terrace. Incredible and outstanding........

The only not so great part of the apartment was the kitchen......the one window was so high I couldn't see out it but the skylight in the kitchen was unique; the stove/oven was a three burner gas range with a 20# propane cylinder on the floor in front of it and a note to keep the gas valve turned off when not in use; and the total count on electrical outlets was one receptacle with two plugs...... Making toast and coffee for four was interesting, to say the least...while still managing to keep the refrigerator plugged in. We shared many a laughs.....

The rest of the apartment was wonderful.....the walk-out windows with the louvers we closed against the afternoon sun; and the window that allowed us to lie in bed in the morning and watch the sunrise..... And the pool on the cliffs and the cliff walk down to the beach.....INCREDIBLE, ALL OF IT. Truly, our Barbados vacation was one of the best of our lives and once I got over the initial minor surprises of the accommodations I wouldn't have traded locations for the world.

We always promised ourselves we'd get back there one day since our t/s exchange at the old Crane was possibly one of the BEST vacations of our life and the Bajans we encountered were wonderful. When I finally looked into going back we discovered the 'new' Crane had been built and it drained our enthusiasm. I'm sure it's lovely but I'm thinking it had to take away from the ambiance we remembered so fondly.

We toured Sam Lords Castle while there and learned some of the history of both places.......he was quite the operator.

I'm guessing anything built there today will be a very different place and I'm so glad we were able to experience it 'back in the day' and to this day, every so often when we haul out the beautiful hand-painted tee shirts we bought at the shop at SLC they evoke wonderful memories of a truly beautiful place. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />
