Anyone going to anchored at Foxy's for New years ? I've been before but never with my own boat. I'm aware is it going to be a nightmarish scenario in that harbor. Any tips?

Never in a million years would we subject our boat to that Harbour on New Years. Not sure where we're going to go yet, but it's highly unlikely it'll be Jost, so I'm interested in other options as well.

You need to get there early, as in days before New Years Eve. We were moored in White Bay last year and it was a total zoo. We saw 3 Cats try to sail right over the reef. We got there on December 29 to get our mooring. For NYE we took a taxi over to Foxy's so we didn't have to worry as much about the dingy dock in Great Harbor which is packed.

I hope it's not one of ours. The safe bet is to take a mooring at Diamond Cay, Foxy's Taboo and cab it over. Otherwise get there two days early and spend half your trip trying to keep other people from hitting you for three days. It's a great way to spend a trip

We will be rocking in New Year's Eve in Cane Garden Bay listening to Quito and the band and watching the folks line up for hours on the dinghy dock to ferry over..no thanks.

ScubaDrew- I misread your post thinking you meant that now you're on your "own" boat.
HOWEVER, check your charter company's policy on JVD for New Year's. Unless you're on a crewed charter, most companies red-line it for the holiday. I can't remember if we were with Moorings or Horizon on our last New Year's charter, but we were all very clearly told that if we went there & there was any damage, we were not insured & would be responsible for any & all damage, out-of-pocket, on the spot, no deductible.

Just get a spot over by Foxy's Taboo or in Little Harbor and take a cab over. Honestly, the worst of the mess is the pile-up of dingys at Great Harbor. THAT is where the chaos is. I will say, it's very entertaining watching the drunk people try to figure out exactly which dingy is theirs as the evening wears on.

Horizon has told me that. I think it's in their charter contract. . I have no idea as to moorings policy

Is it possible to anchor off Sandy Cay and dingy over to Foxy's? Naa stupid idea right? I assume little Harbour will be just as packed as Great Harbour? There has to be a secluded place to park nearby?

That would be a pretty long ride in a dinghy at night, particularly if conditions weren't completely calm or if you don't have a dinghy that gets up on plane. Not a chance in H-E-double hockey sticks I'd try it.

I'd imagine the farther away you get from GH the less crazy the anchorages are but haven't tried it.

Best show is at the West End ferry dock on New Years Day, watching folks stumble off the Jost ferry and the crew drag the buckets and mops aboard. Even more fun if the swells are up. Personally, I stay away from Jost Dec 30,31 and Jan 1. Been there, done that.

We spent the best New Year's ever at The Last Resort a couple years ago... Slept it off for 24 hours tied to the dock at Scrub. Total waste of Scrub but there was NO WAY I was getting on a moving boat for New Year's Day.

We did Foxy's for New Years 2 years ago. We moored at Little Harbour, had a great Lobster at Abe's and took the open bus over the Hill to ring in the New Year. Spent enough time to have some champagne and cheers but left early enough to not have to do too much explaining to my 2 pre-teen sons Then back on the bus (actually a lot of fun) to the peace and quiet...Would have to be one awesome Bloody Mary to deal with that mess over there in the morning! We did get to Little on the 30th though, I think most people start thinking where they want ring in on that day and places fill up. Have Fun!!!

Not really answering your question but we were in the BVIs to ring in 2014. Our first trip there over the holiday so I was a bit paranoid about the crowds etc. Our 7-10 year olds were with us so we weren't looking for the Foxys party. We reserved a slip on NYE in Sopers Hole since I didn't want to rush there from North Sound and expected it to be busy with folks taking the ferry to JVD. Sopers was dead and a it boring so we took a taxi to CGB for dinner at Myetts and drinks along the beach. Wish we had just moored in CGB in hindsight. I was surprised we didn't hear more noise and drunks in Sopers though. Anyway our plan was to move over to JVD the next day. As expected it was a parade of boats leaving GH and we had our pick of mooring balls. Great couple of nights there. Again not helping with your question but just putting that out there as an option for families who aren't looking for a party and want to stay one step behind the crowd.

Great Harbor has plenty of room -- Get there early and make sure you have properly set the hook with the correct rode---- and peel off and talk to your neighbors to make sure they did it right also--- forgot all these fuddy duddies and have a good time

The Moorings and BVI Yacht Charters do allow their boats to go to JVD for NYE. Horizon does not.

You can always anchor outside the reef at White Bay or further out of the bay in Great Harbor.

Have you been to Great Harbour on NYE? There is NOT plenty of room and if you owned the boat you would stay away. You might have the correct rode, but your neighbors might not have a clue.

Now I have to agree with Sail2wind.... Is there some sort of strange planetary alignment thing going on?

I just checked with West Marine and they are sold out of the Force Field enhanced anchoring devices.

I too have to agree with Sail To Wind, I would not take my boat into Great Harbour either.

I'd probably avoid all the busy places for NYE. I'd probably try White Bay on Guana. Then again, we likely won't ever be there that week.

I am undoubtedly biased, living here and have no choice but to go, but OYN/NYE is a load of fun.

If I were on a boat, I'd probably go the route of keeping the boat at Taboo or Little Harbour and cabbing over for piece of mind. Also, the moorings at Sandy Cay are day moorings you are not allowed to overnight there and wouldn't recommend that.

Just as a side note, I spoke to a lady at Foxys last Saturday and she was in the process of getting Last Resort ready for about mid December. The NYE parties have always been good there.

Nick, any word on whether there's a theme for Last Resort's party this year? That's probably where we'll go again... I was told I enjoyed it very much last time!!

Wow! Thank you everyone for the responses. I expected a lot of negativity but feel you guys and gals actually did a nice job with some honest opinions, thoughts, comments, and warnings. Appreciate it not turning into something nasty.

What do you guys think about staying in White bay and taxi over to foxys? I think I could be to white bay by 11am or noon on the 31st.. Probably be full but I'll swing in and see.

Thanks again everyone for the feedback, I'll post a follow up of the experience here in 2015!

Drew

White Bay? Jost? Are you just trying to stir things up? Overnight in White with less than perfect conditions is nuts. Add the Old Years Nite and that’s double nuts. Your charter company would end your charter right there.

White Bay has several mooring balls and my charter company had no problem with us overnighting there last month although they would not allow an overnight on anchor in Great Harbor - only on a mooring.

Manpot. 2 thumbs up for Myett's NYE party. We were there two yrs ago and had a delicious meal and great music and only had to walk (sort of) down the road to the cottages!

You will not get a mooring ball in White Bay on the 31st around 11 due to the day crowds. It is nuts there during the day. Looks a bit like Spring Break, Daytona Beach, 1985. OK, now I'm dating myself! We got to White Bay last year early on the 29th and what we noticed is that mooring balls opened up around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. We just stayed there until New Years day. Took a cab over to Foxy's for NYE. White Bay is one of my favorite anchorages.

You should hope your charter company doesn't see this post... not exactly the right attitude, imo...

Ditto!

Winter months make for a very rough mooring in White Bay. The rollers just keep commng. I have been airborn from my bunk on a number of occasions.
