rhans said: White Bay? Jost? Are you just trying to stir things up? Overnight in White with less than perfect conditions is nuts. What do you think are perfect conditions for White Bay? Or what are conditions in which White Bay should be avoided? I am just thinking about staying there in the next time for overnight at a mooring ...

Several conditions can cause problems at White Bay. One of the worst is a north swell which sends crossing reflected swells off of the USVI cays and the west end of Tortola.

sunbvi said: @GlennA: Thanks a lot for this explanation. I was always wondering why all BVi-books say north swell can be a problem at the south bays of Jost van Dyke. I was not aware of a reflection of the USVI.
Do you think it is also a safety issue to be on a buoy on bad weather in the White Bay or is it only the 'way to the buoy' going between the reefs? The mooring ball should be probably very well fixed on the ground?
For tonight 'Windfinder' forcasts a wind of 18 kts (NE turning in the morning to the east) and a swell of 0.7 meters (ONO - NO). Do you think this is to much? (forecast is for Beef Island, not sure if there is a big difference to JvD).
Does anybody know what have been the reasons for boats running ashore in the past in the White Bay? The moorings in White Bay are dangerous. The boat Mr Bill in the photos above still had the mooring attached to it when it went up on the beach. The scope is so short that when swells come in it pulls the boat forward and jerks straight up on the mooring. That one and most of them that I have seen in White Bay are a single point mooring. If that screw pulls out as it did in this case it's game over. In addition deep draft boats will bounce off the bottom when a swell passes under the boat. This also is not only uncomfortable it's bad for the boat. Jay

Hi Jay, thanks for this information. I wasn´t aware of that the mooring balls in the BVI are attached in a different way. Do you know if there a more mooring balls in the BVI which are not attached in a very good way and you have to be very carefully, too?

Thanks again everyone for all the thoughts and info on this plan. The results are in! We pulled into white bay, dropped our anchor and took advantage of the tanning facilities. That evening we grabbed an open bus over the hill for a good BBQ and got the party started. We cabbed back around 2AM and called it a night. It was the best of both worlds for our type of crew. Sun and sand and soggy dollars during the day, awesome party at night. Quiet, calm, 5 hours of sleep. And my charter company is even letter me take another boat this year! Drew

I realize this is an old thread, but we'll be on JVD (land-based) this year for a week around NYE. Anyone else? Felix

Spent Old and New Years there. Got lucky with weather and after the day crowds left it was a calm, not overly crowded anchorage.

We will be spending the majority of our time lounging around White Bay ... Either at Gertudes, Soggy Dollar or One Love. I haven't had much luck posting pictures on here so you can see our picture but you can find me on Facebook ... Search for Allan Large

We're staying at White Bay Villas Dec. 28 - Jan 4 and will also be lounging around White Bay - Gertrude's, One Love and Ivan's mostly (although I don't object to a shady Soggy Dollar hammock to nap and let the morning buzz wear off). This is me and Nick: Hope to see some of you! Felix ETA: thought I did everything right with that image - guess not! Oh well.

It's weird that I can get the pictures to show up in my signature line --- but not in the body of the post.
