We are returning to the Virgin Islands in late April for a 7 day charter with VIYC out of St. Thomas and were surprised to learn that we are liable for the total cost of our dinghy if it is stolen. On our previous 5 charters I don’t recall this being the case. So, three questions:
One, is this common? And two, if so, what additional insurance coverage would we need to cover this loss if it occurred? And third, how common is dinghy theft in the USVI now days?
Appreciate your feedback on this matter.
Regards

We lock our dinghy in the USVI just to be safe. We also bring it up every night and lock it to the davits. Ask the charter company for a chain and lock.

We lived on our boat for the last four years in the USVI. We used a locking cable when the dinghy was at a dinghy dock or at our boat. Most dinghies that go walk about are because they are not properly secured. Either way, a lost dinghy is an extreme pain and worth making an effort.

Thanks for the advice, I will enquire about the lock and chain with VIYC.

If they do not provide a security solution, you can buy a 15-foot Master security cable and padlocks at the Sea Chest Ace Hardware.
