We have a boat chartered with Moorings for July, but plan to stay in Tortola for two nights prior (arriving Saturday, set sail on Monday). Since we'll likely only have one full day, I am very torn on where to stay. It is a party of six (my husband and I, our three kids, and my mother), so I am anticipating that needing lots of taxis would be inconvenient, but a rental car likely wouldn't be better... So, where would you stay and why? I'd like something where we can walk to dinner or to get a drink, and a beach would be a bonus... Would you do something like Myett's or stay closer to Road Town (perhaps Maria's by the Sea?)? Thanks for any help/advice!

I'm sure others will chime in, but Tamarind Club would be a good one. Pool, bar, good food, and one of my favorite beaches in all of BVI is a 10 minute walk away.

A lot of people will vote for Cane Garden too...and I don't think you could go wrong there either.

For a party of 6 a rental car for 2 days will cost less than a taxi to go 6 blocks. Sebastian's in Little Apple would have beach and access to several restaurants. Rhymer's in Cane Garden to be in the center of things. Ole Works Inn might be another option in CGB.

Has anyone stayed at Oleworks recently? Haven't been in the rooms in awhile, moved to other end of the bay. I know Quito was doing some renovations on them. Curious to hear from anyone who has stayed recently.

I second Glenn's suggestion of renting a car and heading to Sebastian's in Apple Bay - spring for the ocean front rooms. You can drive back and forth to Cane Garden Bay for a little variety but the beach right there at Apple Bay is one of my favorites.

Thanks! I am leaning towards Sebastian's with a car rental now if I can find one that will fit all six (at least we will be packed light given that we have the charter after, so I don't need lots of room for luggage!!) My husband and kids liked the idea of the newer rooms at Maria's, but I am pushing for sand smile

I concur with Sebastian's. We stayed there both before and after our charter in May. Really enjoyed the place.

We've rented from National the last few times. They have locations at the airport, Road Town, near Nanny Cay and at West End, so they are very convenient for drop off and pick up from almost anywhere you might be. They'll pick you up and drop you off too. We were able to just leave the car with TMM last trip, so didn't even need to take the car back to them. Had a party of six adults in a Honda Passport two trips ago, I think it was about $90/day and it worked out fine. You should be able to do just fine with three adults and three kids. They also have minvans, vans and suburbans, although I would probably stick with the Passport or Tahoe with the third row seat as the longer wheel bases can be a bit tricky on the switchbacks.

Once you decide to rent a car, there are tons of options on where to stay. Another one to consider is Heritage Inn at Bananakeet. They have two bedroom suites (with lots of beds, you could probably get your party of six into one of these suites and still have a private room for you and the husband), pool, restaurant and bar on site and incredible views. We spent a few nights there last trip and absolutely LOVED it. The staff there couldn't have been nicer and more helpful either. In fact, our flight was quite late so we didn't get there until about 9 or 10pm. They stayed open just to serve us dinner and drinks, totally turning around a long and somewhat harrowing travel day. Just can't say enough good things, highly recommend.

Agreed. We also stayed at the Heritage Inn pre charter and loved it. Super good people and Bananakeet and its bar are just steps away. You give up the beach front access, but the view from our suite was unbelievable.

We also had a rental, but opted for a quick cab down to CGB for dunks after dinner as we'd been enjoying the liquid cheer a fair bit to that point. It was simple and painless.
