A little-known story about Cinco de Mayo, mostly known among older sailors like myself.
The Titanic was carrying a large cargo of mayonnaise from Europe. After the scheduled stop in New York, the ship was supposed to continue south toward VeraCruz, Mexico, where the mayonnaise cargo would be unloaded on May 5 i.e. Cinco de Mayo.
As we know, the Titanic never reached her destination. The Mexicans, hugely disappointed by the loss of the mayonnaise when the Titanic sunk, decided to commemorate the event every year, and called it Sinko De Mayo, which later became Cinco de Mayo.
