Planning my trip to Japan and dug into the latest entry rules for 2026. Sharing what I found:

• Japan doesn't officially mandate an onward ticket by law, but airlines flying into Narita/Haneda are getting stricter — several carriers now require proof of departure before they'll even issue a boarding pass.
• The Visit Japan Web system now covers immigration, customs, AND tax-free shopping registration. Fill it out before you fly to breeze through.
• If you're on a tourist visa waiver, immigration may ask for a rough itinerary — having a flight reservation (even a cancellable one) helps a lot.

Full breakdown here: https://onwardticket.global/japan-flight-itinerary-rules

Anyone flown into Japan this year? Did the airline check your return flight?

Solid info, Raj! Flew into Haneda back in March and JAL definitely asked for proof of onward travel at check-in in LAX. I used a rental ticket service which worked perfectly. The Visit Japan Web QR code also made immigration super fast. Good looking out — people don't realize how much the airline check matters even when the country itself doesn't require it.
