We heard there were two large ships scheduled to arrive today and when we got up we could see the tenders transporting people to the beach. We decided this would be a good day to visit St. Georges again and try to get some nice photos. We took the bus to the marina and walked to our favorite morning spot to relax a bit before walking into the city.

Some of the fishing fleet

I forgot just how long a walk it is, but Kim made it OK since it was pretty much flat. We stopped at the fish market to see the days catch and stopped at a little bar for a drink. Theresa was at her stand so we stopped by and chatted with her a while before catching an afternoon bus back to the hotel.
We packed our beach things and headed down to get the last of the days sun. I met up with the guys and we sat around drinking the strong rum while Kim improved her tan. Dinner that night was at Umbrellas, some nicely seasoned hamburgers and fries with a few cocktails to wash them down. After that we caught a bus back to the hotel and sat out on the balcony for a while before going to sleep.

Having a few with the guys

Feb.3
We had breakfast at the hotel and then headed off for the beach. I like my chair in the shade so I set up under a large almond tree while Kim put hers in the sun nearby. There was only one ship in today so the beach wasn’t that crowded. I got a bottle of Clarks Court Special Dark from one of the bars (200ml with mixer, glasses and ice for $5 US); these sneak up on you because they just look like small bottles but in actuality are a quarter of a regular bottle so after a couple you’ve drank some rum. I kept thinking of all that beautiful fish at the market yesterday; finally I asked the guy at The Fish Pot Restaurant, one of those little beach shack places, if I could buy a fish meal but bring and season my own fish. He said no problem and with that I was off to the market.

At the fish market

I got a nice slab of fresh tuna; the old woman working the stand hacked it off a larger piece with her machete and then got on the bus back to the beach, my bag hanging out the window since the fish was starting to leak. There must have been some error in communication, because when I arrived to give the man the fish he said come inside and started pointing out the cutting board, knife, bin, oil, frying pan and matches for the stove apparently I’m cooking my own meal today. He washed his hands and left saying “if you need anything I’ll be outside”. I trimmed and sliced the fish into pieces, most of them about an inch but a nice thick one for myself as I like it rare in the middle. I had a jar of my home blend Cajun seasoning and I coated the pieces with a good helping before frying them up in the hot oil.

In the kitchen

It was funny to see the expression on peoples faces as they walked by and saw me cooking in the restaurant. The man came back in to make us some sides and we soon had a feast before us on the little table outside. There was plenty so the guys joined us for a taste, they were impressed with the taste of the fish and seasoning since it was a lot different than the way it is prepared here, even the gentleman from the restaurant gave it the thumbs up and Ester, from the bar next door gave me the high five.

After the sun started to go down we went back to the hotel and got ready to go to the regatta party at Prickly Bay. We took a bus and the driver dropped us off at the marina there for a couple dollars extra since it was off his route. We stayed around for the fireworks but the crowds were a little much for us and since we’re not late partiers we caught a ride back to the hotel for some rest.

Our favorite spot

I was getting tired of the beach, so after dropping Kim off I headed into town, with a detour to our little beach behind the marina. The town was busy, Independence Day is coming up and some groups were practicing their routines. As I walked by the meat market some men were dropping off a large hog for slaughter, they keep them in pens next to the butchers stands until they are needed.

The meat market and lairs

I picked up some stewed fish for lunch and then stopped by to see Theresa and helped her bag up some fresh cinnamon that she will sell at her stand.

At the market

I took the bus back to the beach to meet up with Kim; we spent some time in the sun and swimming before going back to the hotel. Tonight we are having dinner at our friend Bobs’ sisters house. We met him at the beach and took the bus to the road they live on. It’s a long hike uphill to the house, but we passed a lot of fruit trees and modest homes on our way seeing things you would miss on the main road.

Bobs brother in law tending the grill

We were here for a party a couple years ago and it was nice to see how the children had grown in that time. Bob’s sister had been ill and lost some weight, his brother in law suffered for three months with the mosquito virus but everyone was fine now. There was chicken marinated in Bobs’ own blend of green sauce and fish in foil along with some side dishes. The food was good and the company great, we hung out for a bit drinking some rum and chatting; we were able to talk to Bobs’ nephew in Toronto, who we had met before, via skype and got his contact info so we could invite him and his family to Kims summer party next August. Bob guided us down the path to the main road with his flashlight and from there we were able to get a bus home.

Sammy,
Great report as usual and that good looking food is making me hungry (and the rum is making me thirsty). All this time I thought you were working on a highway project in Virginia and there you are in the sun again.
Enjoy and keep the reports coming,
Fred
