Westerhall Estate

We had never visited the Westerhall Estate before, but looking on the island map I saw that it was on a bus route so we decided to take a morning trip out to it. We stopped again at our spot to have a have some water and relax before starting our day.

Once in St. Georges we boarded the bus for Westerhall, the route takes you high up into the hills surrounding Grand Anse and you get some great views from a different perspective than we had seen before.
The driver let us off at the main building where we paid our entrance fee and joined a tour in progress; the gentleman finished the tour just as we got there but another bus of tourist from the cruise ship in town arrived so we joined that tour. It isn’t much of a tour really, he points out some old ruins, rusted waterwheels and equipment; then explains the way the rum was originally made and why they now just blend and age rum from Trinidad rather than make their own. There is a small museum on premises; it has some old artifacts not all dealing with rum; and it’s a chore not to bump into the other people looking at the small display. The best part of the trip was the tasting tent where they had all their products lined up for trying and you got to pour your own as much as you like, there is even a cooler with ice water to cleanse your palette after each sample. Since we weren’t on a tour we had time to wander the grounds a bit, but there really wasn’t a lot to see.

Once back in St. Georges we went looking for lunch to avoid a repeat of yesterday; I say a small bar on the main road with a good line of people waiting so I stopped in there and got an order of oildown. We walked over to the seawall beside the bus terminal and sat on the short wall to share our lunch.

Once back at the hotel we got our beach gear and headed off for our last day on Grand Anse Beach. The cruise ship crowd left shortly after we arrived so I joined the guys for a few drinks before heading back to the hotel to get ready for dinner. We went to Umbrellas for our last meal, figuring it would be nice to have a sit down dinner and drinks; there was a band playing so we stayed for a few after eating and then went back and packed for our trip to Carriacou tomorrow.

Just have to ask-what is oildown? The rum tasting sounds good! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for the report and pics. It has been along time since I have been to Grenada. I forgot how beautiful it it. Have to look up some of my pics tonight.

Oil down is the national dish of Grenada. It's a combination of starchy veggies, pig parts, greens, dumplings and often chicken and or manicou,(which is possum). It's layered in a large cast iron pot and cooked down. It's made probably a little different by different cooks but that's it in a nutshell.
