South Africa - Travel Advisory
Travel Advisory/Cautions

The Australian Embassy on June 28, 2006 updated travel advice for South Africa to alert citizens to reports of "organized gangs operating between Johannesburg International Airport and Pretoria, following overseas arrivals to their homes or hotels and robbing them" and to "exercise a high degree of caution because of the high level of serious crime."
Meanwhile, according to media reports, foreign diplomats, primarily from African nations, have lodged a complaint with authorities in South Africa that they are being targeted for robbery by a crime syndicate working between Johannesburg International Airport and Pretoria. The diplomats cite multiple instances of being followed from Johannesburg Airport and robbed either en route or on arrival at their residence or hotel. Reportedly, some African ambassadors alleged that the organized thieves were working with customs officials / police at the airport to spot diplomats and other foreigners and alert the organized thieves. Further, a Malawian diplomat was quoted "In the past four months at least three embassies had been held up by gunmen"
Comment:Preliminary information indicates most victims were on flights originating in African countries. Although most visits to South Africa are completed without incident, there is a high level of crime. Company business travelers and expatriates are reminded to pre-arrange transportation to/from the airport, arrive during daylight hours when possible, be alert, and remain vigilant regarding personal safety at all times. If accosted by thieves, hand over valuables immediately and report the incident to the police, your embassy and Corporate Security.

Providing you are staying at a nice hotel and have reputable transfers, I would not worry about this.

If you are overnighting in Joburg, you may just want to stay close to the airport at someplace like the Airport Grand Hotel on the budget side (under $100 USD) or at the Airport Continental, a 5* hotel.

My favorite Joburg hotel is the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton. The good thing about this 5* hotel is that it is located in Sandton Square and this is pretty much a self contained little city in itself. This is perfectly safe to walk around, day or night, in Sandton Square and there are many restaurants, shops and even a live theater (the Liberty Theater). The best Indian food I have ever eaten, Bukhara, is located just across from the hotel.

Finally there are a couple other very highly regarded hotels in The Grace and Ten Bompas.

Bottom line...if you stay at a nice enough place, a night or even two can be very rewarding in Johannesburg, especially prior to a safari so you are recovering from jetlag at hotel rates rather than at game lodge rates.
