Hi all......We Will buy drinks, cheese, sandwich meat, bread and fruit. Also need beer and wine for our condo at simpson bay resort. Which is better for prices and is close to us and from airport? Or is there another rec? I don't believe CUL sells wine/beer tho? Merci! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif" alt="" />

Right in Simpson Bay is Market Garden, a large food store that sells beer and wine. Also is Gourmet Marche, which is a smaller version of Grande Marche. You can also drive a bit to the larger Grande Marche stores.

Market Garden is right on the corner where you turn onto Billy Folly Road to go to your resort. It is definitely the most convenient. They are well-stocked and while they're not the most inexpensive store on the island, the prices aren't unreasonable and the convenience is worth a few extra pennies.

Sorry, "CUL" is Cost U Less??? Yes, they do sell wine and beer. However, if you get to Cost U Less, I would go to Grand Marche, across the street. They have a lot better selection of everything and generally smaller packages than Cost U Less.

As far as within Simpson Bay, unless you want something pretty specific, go to Gourmet Marche. Cheaper prices in general than Market Garden, especially for liquor and wine, although Market Garden does have a larger selection than Gourmet Marche and is a tiny bit closer to Simpson Bay Resort.

"Booze is it" (or somthing like that) is located right next to Market Garden. Great selection of wine, beer and spirits.

BOOZE IT UP is a good place to buy liquor, wine and beer and is right next to Market Garden. Market Garden has everything you need as well and the fruits and vegetables are always super fresh. They even sell fresh produce from the local Rasta gardens.

The French side is back on top Euro to the Dollar is back to one. It has been a long time ago that we stopped shopping on the French side. Simply and Howell have great things.

the supermarket at Howell Center (Super U) is fabulous. I was in there this week. Many items are priced cheaper than le Grand Marche. With the Euro and dollar basically evenly matched, it is a great place to shop.
warning: shopping carts you get by inserting a one euro coin. I am told that a quarter works also.
and you must bring your own reusable shopping bags

And as an incentive maybe get your coin back when you return the cart to the proper place. Might keep the carts out of parking spaces.

yes, Grumpy, more places should do this. It is standard operating procedure in Europe.

In Canada many of the less expensive super markets follow this procedure as well. The carts are always returned to the proper areas to get their money back so it does work well.

It's very typical in Europe; I'm surprised it's not done on the Dutch side, but I guess since that's the more "Americanized" side they don't. Market Garden does charge for paper bags if you don't bring your own.

There's a German chain, Aldi, here in the US that has the same arrangement for shopping carts and bags.

Ah yes. And don't forget Rams! Don't think they ever reopened after Luis did they?

Maho Market doesn't provide bags at all anymore do they? BYOBag or box there.....

I've never understood why shopping carts have to go out into parking lots anyway. What happened to the days of baggers who also carried your groceries to the car with you, for tips?

Great advice. Thx! ALDI in the U.S. does this(quarter for cart you get back when returning). It started in Europe. We used to shop there all the time before we moved. No ALDI now. frown Where is Super U in relation to Simpson Bay Resort?

Super U is in Marigot, in the Howell Center. If you're a long time visitor, where Match used to be in Marigot..

Here in RI most places have the "quarter" carts, however, it doesn't keep people from leaving carts all over to roll into the side of a car. I guess some Americans are too "rich" to need the quarter back? Saw some young boys making a "killing" getting those quarters though.
