My husband and spent July 2-16 on Sponge Cake from Conch Charters and I'm finally getting around to briefly sharing the highlights.

Most bizarre encounter: Chief Minister Orlando Smith and a group of very well-dressed BVI politicos dancing the night away at Quito's after a political fundraiser upstairs. Quite the contrast between us slightly grubby-looking tourists and sailors and the elegant upper crust of the BVI. Not that it seemed to bother any of us that they were overdressed...

Hottest place on earth: Belowdecks on our chartered monohull

Best suggestion from TTTOL'er for item to bring along: Baby powder!! It made the sticky nights tolerable!

Second hottest place on earth: Conch Charters base

Best place to sit on the beach and watch the sun set: Cooper Island Beach Club

Best Meal: Brandywine Bay...no comparisons!

Breeziest mooring fields: Anegada, Trellis, Marina Cay

Most welcome sight: Freshwater pool at Leverick

Best snorkeling: Monkey Point

Most unique fish sighting: A 4-6 foot leopard ray leaping completely out of the water. We just wondered what he was trying to escape from ...

Best people to introduce you to Anegada: Nancy and Walker (thanks a million!)

Best provisions: Sailor's Ketch...wow! Try the smoked marlin or the seasoned octopus...awesome!

Most unimpressive snorkeling: Marina Cay...not worth the trouble...just go to the bar and skip the snorkeling!

Weirdest reason for a plane to be delayed five hours: The baggage handler hit the wing with his cart...really! Passengers saw it happen through the windows. Wonder if he still has a job...

Super customer service: Conch Charters. When American Airlines delayed our BVI arrival by an entire day, Conch just shifted our charter dates.

The dialect: The same cab driver took us to our hotel upon our arrival and returned us to the airport on our departure. When we arrived, he was speaking some unfamiliar language, and two weeks later, he was understandable...hmm...

We had a great time, thanks in no small part due to the wonderful suggestions made by members of this board. But...[color:"red"]it was freaking hot!!!!![/color] I've never been so glad to find air conditioning in my entire life! (and we lived in Arizona for ten years) In CGB, we hung out in front of the refrigerated cases at Bobby's discussing the merits of different cheeses until the clerk began staring at us. So we moved on to yogurt. We were in the BVI two weeks and I kept thinking that we'd get used to the heat. No such luck. Are we just westerners accustomed to low humidity or are we A/C spoiled? How do you deal with it? Our boat had poor ventilation, which didn't help. Would a cat have been better? A great time was had, but next time we may be land-based, in an air-conditioned hotel. Unless we can find other sailors to share a cat with...
