I stayed at the Flamingo 5 years ago. When I returned last year I was determined that that hill wouldn't KILL me... so I started walking (actually I'd lost weight the summer after I got back but still was not gonna fear 'the hill.') Then I realized I didn't have to walk the hill, I could cut through the Pelican. I also realized I didn't have to stay on the road around the greenhouse to get to other restaurants, but I could cut through the beach. So I'm more in shape but lazier! hmmmm....I'd love to return this summer and learn other useful things!

Not specifically for our trips to St, Martin, but we went to Disney around the time that my daughter decided that she was much too big for a stroller. As expected, I had to carry her at the end of day and, in truth, there isn't a machine in even the largest gym that will prepare you for carrying on your shoulders nearly 40 lbs of sleepy girl the breadth of the Magic Kingdom after a day in the park.

Last year I missed the opportunity to do the stairmaster workout that is the approach to Fort St. Louis in Marigot because of a stress fracture in my knee. This year I will certainly get to enjoy that spectacular view. We try to exercise while on vacation along with taking regular walks but by the end of our two weeks on the island, our motivation has usually been exhausted.

My wife and I work out regularly. Truth be told she is a mutant and I just try to not look like her Dad on the beach!

This past January we did not work out on the trip and have sworn that will never happen again.

That being said we did have to walk the hill you referenced and even in decent shape that incline can be quite the challenge. I run two 8:15 minute miles every other day and that hill was still a pain in the _ss! Can't imagine having to walk it while completely out of shape. I would be all sweaty when I got to my destination.

We try to work out when not on vacation but that doesn't always work out (no pun intended).

However, when on St Martin we like to do our workouts with a view (taking long walks, hiking to Petiites Cayes, snorkeling to Green Key, etc.)

Gee, now THAT type of working out I do all year! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" /> For the past few months, I have started the other type of working out also and it's not as enjoyable.. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Smile.gif" alt="" />

I started swimming laps too! I got the stupid idea in my head to do a refresher dive so I had to find non-busy gym times! I hadn't been diving for 23 years, but the dive went well! ( and do any of you do this? tape local music? I was at Church on Monday, shocked they didn't have cds to buy so I whipped out my phone. I played some of it back today and right in the middle of Superstition, I was explaining to my dive partners from the morning ( who just happened to pop in) that I was really old and on my 4th midlife crisis and THAT's why I went diving! (actually it's my third.) So there are ups and downs to these new phone capabilities... but what a hoot!

Work out year round. Bike as long as possible throughout the year but being in Nebraska we're forced to work out indoors in the winter months. We have a treadmill, elliptical and exercise bike in our basement for that. While in SXM we play 2-3 hours of volleyball a day at Club O.

the OP is not one of those people who is good enough at life to continue doing what he's doing. I just got cleared for another trip (got the time off, now have to book) and now the partial madness begins. I have to start swimming ... in case I want to dive again... walking for the hills... do I buy a go pro? I need a radio, since they took them out of the rooms... is it possible to lose 20 pounds in less than a month? sigh...

Sure. I try hard to lose some weight.

Just so the clothes I wore down will fit on the flight back.

Just to be safe, I've taken to wearing pants with an elasticized waist on the way down. :-)

I swam today.. I managed 11 laps (in a mask & snorkel-why fight it? I won't be really 'swimming' without one-just bobbing around or lounging in the surf) Clap for me!
