Thanks you. Unfortunately, I used my November trip this past May to stay in Vista Royale for a week.

For peace of mind and, if it would work for you, I would get to JFK and stay there for the night.

Norm, If you can fly into JFK and spend the night, do that. The hotel shuttle will pick you up at the terminal and then return you in the morning, all for a couple buck tip to the driver. The driving time from LGA to JFK is 20 - 30 mins. depending on time of day. Bob

Norm,
I agree with the others that recommend avoiding LGA. We fly in and out of JFK and stay at the Hilton Garden Inn (usually using a Park-n-Fly option), it is close, clean and has a very good shuttle service. We have used the shuttle as early as 5:00am and as late as 11:00pm with no problems. If you do end up going to LGA and then on to JFK, I would recommend a car service. It is not as costly as a limo and a lot easier on the nerves than a taxi. That ride from LGA to JFK can sometimes be a bear. I wouldn't want to do it in the morning if I had a plane to catch, you never know how the traffic is going to be. I've taken 2 hours to get from the Holland Tunnel to JFK before. Good luck with whatever you do. Phil

I think the problem is the inbound NY flight lands at LGA and the outbound departs JFK. My suggestion was to get to JFK at leisure the day before and then only have a short trip to the terminal. You never know what can happen on the Van Wyck.

Thanks all for advice. Silverfox had it right. AA flys us into LGA , then departs from JFK. That's cause I want to use miles to pay for trip. You wouldn't expect them to treat ff with easy connections. Still researching options. Also hate to fly North in January when I want to go South.

Norm, Depending on weather and time of day it can take you 30-60 mins to get from LGA to JFK. I agree with silverfox if you can get there the day before it would be a lot less stressful.. Good Luck

Norm,
I would really hate to see you fly into JFK OR LGA in the winter months IF you can find any more southern route that would work for your FF miles.
We came home from SXM two years ago in December in a snowstorm and it wasn't pleasant. We spent three days worrying about the projected forecast before we left SXM and then hours at the airport agonizing over it until we finally departed from PJIA and then we worried all the way home about the 'what ifs' of landing and getting back to CT in the bad weather. It was a lot of stress and the worrying/wondering definitely took some of the pleasure from our last three days on the island.

I personally think you should get to JFK and book a room there then shuttle over to the airport in the morning. There are a lot of good reasonable priced hotels in the area.

How about through Miami? Big AA hub. LGA to JFK is really tough. Especially a winter flight. Good luck. irina

Yes, obviously Miami is a much better choice. I would say from personal experience though, as of NOW, AA doesn't charge anything to change FF tickets, if there is another FF flight available for the same amount of miles later on. So you can book something you are not happy with, and then if FF tickets come up later on (even so late as a week or even a DAY before your flight) you can change with no fee. We changed our return flight from SXM in December a DAY before our return home for no charge.

Yes, that's true. AA does NOT charge to change FF tickets. We too changed our return from SXM because of a hurricane. Left a day early. MIA much better now. They made huge changes to AA terminal, more kiosks, better organized etc. irina

I think Norm would probably rather go through Miami too, to avoid weather issues in the winter, but MIA connection not available now. Based on personal experience, what is available changes by the day, so I might take a chance and book it now, IF he needs to use FF for sure.

As an added bonus of staying near JFK there is a casino just a short cab ride away at Aqueduct race track, food, entertainment and horse racing (certain times of the year). It's virtually across the street and guessing a $10 cab fare at best each way. JFK is never shut down for very long for snow, it's surrounded by temperate water and an aggressive snow removal program, after 50 years of flying out of there I've never had a weather related major problem although traffic problems pretty much all the time.

I assume you would have an early morning flight to SXM out of JFK (9:00am or earlier meaning you are arriving no later than 7:00am for an international flight) and if that's the case, going from LGA to JFK is no big deal. I regularly fly out of JFK on early morning flights and I pass LGA on the Grand Central Parkway to get to JFK. From my home in the Bronx to JFK for those early flights I never need more than 45 minutes and from the time I am passing LGA it's about another 20 minutes to JFK. I do this frequently and I have never missed a flight at JFK. Now if you have an evening flight, that could take more time due to traffic.
However, for peace of mind you might want to settle in right near JFK so there is no worry in the morning.
