We didn't think we were going to make it to the VI's this year, but Maytrix and his family have kindly invited us to sail along with them in August!!

Our daughter is going to study abroad this fall so we are happy to have this great family vacation planned! Question for you, we may stay an addition 2-3 days somewhere after the charter? we are thinking we could stay on Tortola or Puerto Rico, have never been to PR other than the airport so info is appreciated!

Thanks again Maytrix, looking forward to this!! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Cheers.gif" alt="" />

Glad we could make it work! Looking forward to it!

We stayed over night in PR once and had enough time to tour the Bacardi factory which was fun, we still have the bottle of rum we got.

Probably would be a fun stop on the way back. They have some great beaches and other sites.

If you are a sci fi fan, perhaps a trip to the famous radio satellite would be interesting. I think it was in Golden Eye and Contact. forgive my spelling but I think it is Aericebo.

Cool stuff!
A stay in PR would be good.
Old San Juan is good for a day of exploration, and it's also well worth a drive into the rainforest (El Yunque) for a hike.

There's a wide range accommodations in around SJ PR. Depends on what you like, what you want to pay and, if you are going to site see, what area you want to stay in. I'd recommend you take a look at Trip Adviisor to get a feel for what you think you might like there. Pretty sure one of us here can comment on it first hand.

We occasionally stay in PR going or coming. I know that the wrath of god is about to come down on me, but avoid the airport hotel at all cost.
In Old San Juan, there is a great hotel called The Gallery Inn. It is a very special little place at reasonable prices. Here is a link: http://www.thegalleryinn.com
If you want to splurge, the El San Juan is a first class resort hotel.

Looking forward to Coco Maya! I think we'll plan on being that way later in the trip - as we get closer, that's one thing we should probably settle on so we can make reservations.

We've stayed in Condado. It's kinda like the "South Beach" of San Juan.

Sorry Mike, I don't think LeBron follows TTOL. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" />

Nothing wrong with the airport hotel if you are flying into SJU at midnight and out at 8am the next morning. If there is some horror story I haven't heard, please share!

But, if staying in San Juan for a couple days to sight see and relax, then no, I don't think anyone would advise staying in the airport hotel for that!

I agree - for a one night layover where you don't have a lot of time, the Airport hotel is a good option. In a case where you'll be staying multiple nights or have plenty of time to go offsite, then I would go elsewhere.

Everytime we've stayed that airport, it's been to catch 4-5 hours of sleep. The one time we had a long layover (long enough to visit the Bacardi factory) we stayed offsite at a DoubleTree Hotel (if memory serves me correctly).

Still haven't made up our minds, but Rita staying on Virgin Gorda sounds tempting, we've always wanted to spend extra time there! To me, it brings back memories of St John when I first started trekking down in the early 80's, it's definitely on the list, I would like to walk the Baths at sunrise and/or sunset, thanks.

Warren I said "trekking" but we are not usually sci-fi people, but is it cool?

Twanger, Old San Juan and the Rainforest are exactly the sort of things that we would want to explore! If we have only 2 nights is the rainforest really an option?

Mike, the Gallery Inn in Old San Juan looks very much our speed for sure, I'll show my wife and daughter tonight! Curious if the location is walking distance to cool stuff and restaurants? I assume my camera will get a workout in Old San Juan!

Thanks everyone <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Cheers.gif" alt="" />

I have not been. But it's on my list. It's out west so it's probably not doable. We have a favorite restaurant in fajardo. It's called the gas station. Try mafongo while you are there.

Wow! Two lucky couples.
And credit the power of TTOL. not many folks would spend a week on a boat with some folks that they don't know.

You have a spare cabin? <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Joy.gif" alt="" />

We frequent SJU, visit old San Juan, but stay on Condado and Isla Vista. Love the Metropole for fantastic food. Worth a stay just for that visit!
