In the past our flights leaving SXM have caused us to miss our connection in CLT. Plus we have encountered LONG lines there with immigration/customs. Philly is closer to home so if something happens (i.e. missed flight) we can always rent a car and drive home. I was going to mention the driving home aspect. We've also done that in the past.
