Older couple,1st visit to Martinique. Staying at La Pagerie in La Trois Islets. Kate's fantastic trip report has answered many questions but.... How's the driving towards the south beaches and Sainte-Anne? Has anyone hired a driver for the day? Recommendation? $$? What are the customs regarding tips for taxi and restaurants?

I can help with the tip question, as I've spent a lot of time in France, and Martinique is definitely French. The tip is included in the price of the meal. It's customary to leave a little extra if you had a good experience, usually in the form of cash.
Other than that, I hope you have a great time. My daughter loved it there when she did a semester in college.

Driving is easy and the main roads are well marked. Getting a rental car can be difficult at times so plan ahead.
You are in France so the service charge is included in your bill by law. If you want to tip an additional little amount (usually a few coins) you can if you want but it is not necessary nor expected.
Have a great trip.
