My sister is leaving on Saturday for St. Martin. We took her last year for her first trip and she's hooked. She called me last night and asked what kind of Mosquito repellent to get. Ive never had an issue or used any in the 10 years i've been going. Should she get something before she leaves or get it on the Island. Any suggestions? She's staying at the Simpson Bay Villas.

Thanks

The Off brand should be available in most stores. It's been my aerosol repellent of choice for years. I'm also partial to Mosquito Milk, a roll-on repellent.

If she chooses to buy at home, aerosol repellent up to 17oz may be packed in checked bags, and up to 3.4oz in a carryon bag at a TSA checkpoint. http://www.faa.gov/about/initiatives/hazmat_safety/

No matter what she picks, the best repellent is the one that she remembers to use.

I love the Mosquito milk in the roll on format. I don't even cover my skin completely but do a few "stripes" of the stuff and that keeps me bite free. Also like that it does not have a strong odor.

I've tried many different products over the years including the magical island potion, Mosquito Milk, but I still prefer my OFF towelettes to all of them. They're neater and can be easily carried in a pocket or a wallet or small purse and they are very effective.

I like to use Cutters Skinsations in a pump spray. Has a pleasant smell and not a harsh dose of DEET.

Great mosquito repellent. Very hard to find in the US
Look in baby aisles of stores. Ebay is where you will find it. I swear by this stuff not one bite all summer long and trust me mosquitos love me.

We always use Deep Woods Off.

If you are on the beach it is also very important to spray your legs and feet with DWO no later than 2:30 or 3:00pm before the sand fleas emerge each afternoon. Read Herman Wouk's "Don't stop the Carnival " for more insight...

We have visited St. Martin in spring, summer, and fall, nearly all times staying at Club Orient. The problem I had on one of my first stays was triggered by walking across the sand and grasses from the beach back to our mini-suite on one afternoon...and having no problem then but having painful bites all over my lower legs and feet the following day.

The French pharmacist at the drug store in Cul de Sac diagnosed the problem and gave me a prescription cream that stopped that quickly and recommended the deet repellent from the knees down rvery afternoon.

Ever since that early trip I have had no further problems...

The US CDC recommends any product with Deet. It is he only ingredient proven to repel bitting insects . it has been used since the Vietnam war. OFF is one product which has different percentages of DEET. The higher the percentage the longer the repelling of insects.

High % of Deet can melt rain gear. Had it happen to mine. Just think what it does to your organs as it leaches through your skin. Get a low % of Deet and apply more often if needed.

Do you put it over sun tan lotion, or by itself, in the daytime while on the beach? Does it negate the sun tan lotion?
Thanks?

Just have a mosquito MAGNET like me around and they'll be too busy to bother you. That is why my wife never seems to get bitten.

Sun screen first, then repellent. The repellent will not negate the sun screen, but if you reverse the odor the the sun screen will negate the repellent.

If you're adverse to Deet then try a repellent with Picaridin. Sawyer makes several. Picaridin-based repellents are going to be harder to find on SXM, if you can find one at all.

Relating to my other posting,we like to stay on the beach until later in the afternoon, and that's when I'm concerned about getting bitten. We're arriving Sat. Thanks.

Post your picture so we know who to look for and hang out with! It seems to be hit or miss if I am bothered. If going out at night to a place that has a lot of vegetation, I will use some kind of repellant, along with moderate doses of an internal treatment, wine or Scotch!

Not sure about repellant, but an observation.. mosquitos are actually drawn to CO2. When do we produce CO2? When we talk. The more you talk the more CO2 is released. A husband and I made this observation when our wives were complaining about the bugs going after them... and not after us. JUST saying.

I just heard about "Net Effect" - available in the States - same as Mosquito Milk - same mfr.
I tried MM years ago and it did not work for me.
I use Repel 100 - 100% Deet, I get it in the camping department at Wally World, it is effective.
I apply morning, noon, and night. I also carry Benedryl, AfterBite and Gold Bond anti itch :-)
