Is there any local knowledge as to the wave conditions in May concerning the Bubbly Pool ? Are the waves too small to get the bubbling action, or is it a 'hit and miss' thing ?

If there is a North Swell, the pool is generally more active. If you are concerned, I would plan a day when the swell is from the East, Much more enjoyable!

Hit or miss based on the day's forecast. I've been visiting in May for years, and have seen a wide range of conditions at the Bubbly Pool during that month - from totally flat and hardly any water in the pool at all, to very active.

The turbulence generated in the Bubbly Pool is dependent on the wave height on the NE side of JVD.
This site will give you a fairly good idea of the conditions that day if you can access it while you are here:

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/show_plot.php?s...;time_label=GMT

6' or more would be pretty active.

Local Sailor thanks! The Bubbly pool is on my daily walk when we are on Jost. This will be a great site to turn the villa renters onto. Thanks again! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Wink.gif" alt="" />

Just a note of obligatory safety...

once the swell get above a couple of meters, things can get dangerous. we have seen a 50 footer GO OVER the tops of the rocks. I have pictures...

Even when the swells are ~2m, sometimes they can double up on themselves and create a bad situation.

We hear you! The utmost respect must be shown to the power of the rocks, ocean, tides, swells, etc. Always, safety first!

10 minutes before i took this photo, a family arrived with their kids. I DESPERATELY pleaded to get their 5/7 year old kids off the rock that looks like a turtle in the picture. They looked at me like I was insane, but I told them if you don't, I will.

shortly after I took the picture the mother was in tears hugging/thanking us.

Safety third.

this was two days after two people perished there, one was a VISAR rescuer.

Wow!
We've only been to the Bubbly Pool in the summer season and it's generally very sedate.

Y'know, I've always enjoyed playing in the surf, including pretty big surf. But not when there are rocks nearby. That just looks too damn unpredictable to me.

Yeah, between the young kids on the rock at the lower left that I scooted off. and my son on the rock taking other awesome pictures, i was pretty stressed out. Although it was a pretty epic picture.
