Hi, I'll be staying in Grand Case next month. I want to make a reservation for beach chairs and lunch at Anse Marcel Beach Resort for a day. Is the only way to do this to call them? I can't find a working website. Also, does anyone know if they take credit cards or is it cash only. Thanks

If you're on Facebook, you can send them a private message to reserve the chairs. That's what we did last year, and it worked perfectly. They do take credit cards, but their machine wasn't working when we were there, so be sure to have enough cash just in case. Actually we make sure of that wherever we go.

On the credit card subject, I had quite a few places that said my credit card was 'Declined'. I gave them another and another and they were all declined.

I even called Capital one in there presence and Capital one had no record of the merchant even trying to process a charge. I think some of the merchants say it was declined in order for you to pay in cash.

I believe they try to run it as a debit, skip the pin and it shows up declined.

I've been told my card was declined once, at Market Garden on Billy Folly Road. They actually gave me a copy of the recipt that clearly said "declined". I freaked, called the card company, and got the same answer, that no charge had been attempted. I used the card successfully several times after this, and even at Market Garden. That's when I realized that their system gives them a declined message when it's down.

Some merchants may pull that as a trick to get cash, but I've never had that experience. Not to say it doesn't happen....

They gave me the receipt also declined but it also said Debit not credit. Not a big deal though.

If they process it as a Debit when its a credit card it will come back declined. Re submitting it as a credit card should take care if it.

Is the resort the only place that rents chairs? Also if you rent chairs are you required to buy food and beverage? In all my years going to SXM never been here and thought about spending a day here.

I don't know the answer to your first question, but if you pay for the chairs there's no obligation to purchase food or beverage. That said, since there is a restaurant and bar on the premises, I (and this is just my opinion) think it's inappropriate to bring your own food and beverages to the premises. In fact, I believe I read that someone said they have a sign that prohibits coolers. This is a high-end beach resort, and their goal is to keep it that way.

We were there there in December and there was definitely a sign reading 'no coolers' just as you access the beach through the main entrance. It may still be there or perhaps its gone by now, but regardless, this is one beach location where I would NOT feel comfortable in bringing a cooler even if there was no sign. But to each his own.......

And yes, it's definitely a little pricier here than many of the other beach spots so probably not an every day beach for many of us (definitely not our everyday spot) but nonetheless, the property is great in my personal estimation.

The food and service has been excellent every time we've spent the day, and the furnishings along with the beach itself are all beautiful. Actually the RIU is an AI resort and they don't sell food, you are issued a wrist band at check-in and they serve guests. I have heard that they sell a day pass but I can't verify that. The Anse Marcel Beach Cafe, adjacent to the RIU beach has chairs, and in my opinion, excellent food at their restaurant.

There isn't anything "formal" or in writing about having to purchase food and beverages (or at least I didn't notice it)if you pay for chairs at the Anse Marcel Beach Cafe but you can be assured it isn't typical and would likely be frowned upon. There are only so many chairs on the beach and I'm pretty sure that the business is structured so that visitors have lunch on premises. We were surprised at how many people came to the cafe just for lunch given the area is a little remote for business people.

The area has a very French feel and we really enjoyed the day there.

I don't think this question is about the beach at the Riu, but rather at the nearby beach at the Anse Marcel Beach Resort. Which makes the remainder of your response in complete agreement with mine.

There is a spot between The Riu and Anse Marcel Beach Club that rents chairs, and yes you can bring your own cooler to this area. We have done it many times along with many visitors and residents of the island. It is just under the stand that rents out equipment.

Here in SXM and had been looking forward to bringing my family of 4 to Anse Marcel Beach tomorrow. We have been coming to SXM for nearly 20 years and have never ventured to that area except for day trips from Scoobidoo even though our house is nearby in Orient Bay Estates. I'm getting leery of going tomorrow due to excessive costs warnings.. Are we talking about $50 for 4 chairs and an umbrella and then overly expensive food and drink? I'd appreciate any insight before we take on that big hill!

Don't be scared.......

When all was said and done I think our last full day there ran about the same as our typical days at Dreams or at any of the nicer spots on Orient. A lot more than a day at Mullet with ribs at Rosies but still a great day in every way.

We had front row chair set-ups which included an umbrella and a drink table and I do remember the chair set-up was twenty Euro for both of us. I didn't think it was outrageous but note please, after our day of wining and dining there, we were perfectly content to snack in that night and skip a formal dinner out somewhere. The menu has many options and if I'm remembering correctly, our day inclusive of food, drinks and chairs was about $105.00 and we did ask them to charge us in Euros for the better exchange rate on our credit card. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

Wow.. I am kinda scared.. Would not be happy spending $200 + for one beach day.. For example today we were at La Playa and paid $30 for 4 chairs, 2 umbrellas, and 2 tables, and 4 (small) drinks and then we all got paninis at yellow submarine to carry out ( my son got 2!) for $6 each + fries and then other assorted drinks and I am sure we came in at around $100..
for the day.. Is there a menu I can check out?

Anse Marcel is a beautiful beach, and their restaurant is exceptional. However, if you're looking for a budget beach day, this isn't it.

Again, if you're on Facebook, their page includes some examples of their menus for special events, and photos of some of their menu items, but I didn't see anything with the current menu there.

For those that have been to both, how would you compare the FOOD at AMBR to Dreams? I know the beach at AM is much superior, but I would hate to go there and be disappointed in the food. Also, I assume that you can get a glass of wine in a glass glass at your chair at AMBR? That is one of the things that I love the most about Dreams, not having to deal with plastic glasses. ...and that it's just a hop over the border to get to Dreams..

I think the food is comparable, and yes, your drinks and wine are delivered in real glass at your chairs. The difference we noticed was that we didn't feel as welcome at Anse Marcel as we do at Dreams. Some might say that's because we're regulars at Dreams, but even the first time we went, and Bruno wasn't there when we arrived that day, we felt more welcome at Dreams than at AM. Anse Marcel seems a bit stuffier than Dreams. I also think Anse Marcel is a better fit for a romantic day with just the two of us, than with another couple or a group. But that's just my opinion....

We didn't find AM to be stuffy at all but I do agree, it's probably a better location for a couples day.

We were warmly greeted at the beach entrance where we were escorted to chairs and our lunch reservation and drink orders taken. The young man who seated us was kind enough to caution us as to the extreme sun in regard to sunscreen and he also offered me - the pale blond in our group - a second umbrella should I decide I needed it. Totally solicitous and equally friendly and charming. And did I mention, he was very attractive!! Carol,We have been to both & we love them both... I would describe AMBR as a slightly more upscale version of Dreams... and VERY French. The food quality is as good, maybe slightly better. The beach is nicer then Dreams. Also, AMBR has the nicest beach restrooms on the island in our opinion - but we have not been to all. You will spend more at AMBR (mostly because of the cost of the chairs and umbrellas). If you do go, reservations are a must, especially if you want front row seating and your preferred lunch time.We had been going to SXM for 16 years before our first visit last Thanksgiving.. we find it a very relaxing and enjoyable day.. a bit pricey - but worth it!

Things may have changed but last December, but before the 15th and Last April, but after the fifteenth, we did not have nor did we need reservations for lunch or front chairs. IMHO I don't agree except for the statement that the beach is better. For us the food at Dreams was far superior, the welcome warm & sincere whereas food at AM wasn't as good nor as well presented nor as tasty as Dreams and it cost more. There was a chair charge at AM even though eating there and no charge at Dreams.

I'm very, very fond of Anse Marcel; it's likely my favorite beach on the island. We all have different tastes, but I've had some exquisite meals there. I went in June last year and reservations were not necessary for a front row seat, except on Father's Day. However, they stagger the second row when they have one so you still have a straight view to the water.

Simply because getting into the water is so easy and it's so calm, I prefer Anse Marcel over Dreams. But Dreams is a wonderful place to dine, for sure.

Sorry Pat, I cant answer this as we there there Thanksgiving week and Regatta week. Reservations were needed for sure both of those dates.

I will be there April 5-12 and would like to know how to go about making reservations for AMBR both for chairs and lunch. There will be 3 of us so figure reservations will be needed.
