The hill to the south and the dirt road to the south aren't gated and nothing can stop people wandering in from the beach. That is true of most beach resorts though... SXM is still a relatively safe place to travel to if you are smart. If you walk around being flashy with a ton of cash problems can find you.

SXM is less than 100k or, for perspective, roughly the same as Lawrence, Kansas. On a per capita basis SXM had more shootings over Memorial Day weekend than Chicago.
