When I first stayed at Royal Palm (many years ago) they had a sail-type awning covering the entrance area. It was replaced often didn't last long and was eventually replaced with the permanent structure that now houses the under-used Upper View Lounge.
Not related to the Orient Beach situation other than the awnings will likely be an issue and probably soon.
