Almost bought an slr digital camera at SAMs club before we left. Regretting not buying and wondering a good place to go on island.

I bought one camera on the island and regretted it. The price wasn't much better than I could have had here in Canada, and there are concerns if you need warranty work here in Canada. There are some other downsides too, with doing updates etc. online

Unless you know EXACTLY what you are buying I would shop online at B&H Photo and have it before you go. If you are there now only place I think of is Boolchands

It sounds like they are currently on island. I would also say Boolchands.

I would say get something cheap for now, then buy your DSLR when you get back home.

Bear in mind that the warranties on cameras bought in SXM may not apply in / or be as good as those on cameras you buy in the US. I rely on Costco and even Best Buy (sale prices) for cameras and electronics. Warranties are very, very important.

I priced out 5 cameras in the states with Best Buy and Walmart. The only saving on any of the cameras was sales tax. Most shop owners quoted me much higher prices until I took out my price list. I went to 3 stores in St. Martin and the best they would do is price match. For the cost of sales tax, I prefer to buying the camera at Best Buy.

couple of years back......i bought a minolta digital on sxm, after my old camera died. It came from Boolchand's...on front street i believe. i negotiated and negotiated...and finally came to terms. I was thrilled.....until we got home...and was shopping in BJ's....and found the exact camera.....FIFTY bucks cheaper at BJ's. To say i was a bit pissed off of the camera store in SXM would say it mildly. Just thrilled I didn't cave in to the earlier prices they were throwing at me. Jewelry prices can't be beat on the island....but electronics...cameras......buy them at home.

There are no good deals on electronics on Front Street. B&H is great.

Do not buy a camera in SXM. BH Photo or amazon.

I bought my Canon G9 with the underwater case in SXM. Lot less than if I bought it in the States. We had called our secretary back home and she checked all prices before we bought. Saved about 20% not counting our 10% sales tax buying from Boolchands. When my G9 was stolen (not in SXM) insurance bought me the G10 that I use now. There are some good prices to be had but you need to do your home work and know what you want.
