The restaurants that are closest are in Havensight: Tap and Still, Smoking Rooster, Pizza Amore, Barefoot Buddha, and in Yacht Haven Grande: Grande Cru, Fresh, Fat Turtle. You are fairly close to Frenchtown where there are a whole bunch of other restaurants.
Grocery stores: Pueblo in Long Bay, Gourmet Gallery in Havensight and Fruit Bowl for fresh produce.
While you aren't really "off the beaten path", unless you are on a boat like Evan , you will need a car.
One thing: September is a very quiet month. You may be the only people on some beaches, but you may find some restaurants and bars closed.

Also, the car ferry stops fairly early, so if you want to stay for dinner, you definitely need the people ferry. The last ride home from Cruz Bay is 11pm.

If you use just cabs, you'll be broke by the end of the week. They charge per person and probably the minimum from the Cove will be $5 one way. If you are going to Red Hook to drink heavily and then drive back, you might want to take a cab. The biggest problem now is finding parking. LOL
