From my 1979 recipe book that came with my crockpot we got for our wedding..

Hamburger Casserole

2 large sized potatoes, sliced
2-3 medium carrots, sliced
1 No 2 can peas, well drained
3 medium onions, sliced
2 stalks celery, sliced

1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef, browned
1 10 ounce can tomato soup
1 10 ounce can water

Place layers of vegetables, in the order given, in the crockpot. Season each layer with salt and pepper. Put the hamburger on top of the celery. Combine the tomato soup and water and pour over top. Cook on low 6 to 8 hours or 2 to 4 hours on high, stirring occasionally.

I made this tonight, exactly as stated, with the only change that I used frozen peas, as I loathe canned peas, and I added a bit of oregano and garlic. I cooked it 4 hours on high in my old 4 quart crock pot. I thought the result was very good, although slightly sweet, which I did not expect. Perhaps it was the tomato soup?? I would definitely make it again, although I would probably chop the potatoes and the onions, not slice them, as the size of the pieces was too large to me. And I would probably substitute a can of diced tomatoes for the tomato soup.
