I am pretty sure you won't be able to get a taxi. Heck, half the time I've been in Coral Bay, I couldn't get a taxi. Usually you stay in the southern bays like Lameshur and Salt Pond for the solitude. Also, it can be rough there in certain conditions.

The road to Lameshur is, indeed, right next to the beach. But it's a rough, unpaved road, and there certainly won't be taxis waiting for anyone. (Our Jeep rental contract prohibited going there. But we didn't read that until after we'd made the round trip to Lameshur....)

SuburbanDharma,
If you had east a couple bays to Salt Pond it is a short walk up the hill to a bus stop. The bus on STJ have gotten much better in recent year and will take you to Coral Bay or all the way back to Cruz Bay. The schedules can be found online.
The chances of catching a taxi from or back to Lameshur is 0. There is great snorkeling there and I heard from a friend even some even better snorkeling in the little bay in between Lameshur and Salt Pond. Do not know the name. Best to get there by dinghy because the entry is not part of park system from the land entry and understand the owners have it blocked off now. Cannot confirm that.
Either way - I think Salt and the Bus may be your best bet.

sail2wind said: Salt Pond might have the best snorkeling in St.John. Cool! I've never been there. Actually, in all these years of cruising the Virgin Islands we're never once stopped on the south side of St. John. We often have NOOBs aboard and sailing the south side of the islands can be a little rough for them.
