what island??? If you are talking USVI I absolutely recommend renting a car for the freedom and generally the cost vs. taxi on all 3 major islands.

For St. Thomas, not going to St. John, then the airport rental car companies are fine. I go with the cheapest price. If you need a 4WD for St. John we prefer Amalie Car Rental.

We always compare prices and end up booking with Budget at the airport and have never had a problem, some folks have other favorites. There are many threads on the subject on the St Thomas forum on TripAdvisor if you want to research more.
Book in advance, especially in high season.
