They had problems last time Marion tried to stay - no warning that they had to cancel - had to find another hotel at 11:30 PM with no help from the front desk.

We have stayed at the hotel that is actually in the airport. It is very convenient, especially if your flight leaves early or you get in very late. Breakfast is included, and is quite good. We have also stayed at the Marriott complex you mentioned, usually in the Courtyard hotel that is there. We have gotten deals before through www.simpleairportparking.com to park our car on the Marriott grounds (for less than Marriott charges and less than the airport charges). So we stay at the Courtyard, leave the car on the gated grounds, and take the Marriott shuttle back and forth to the airport. As for the neighborhood, I suppose it is probably not the most upscale one you'll find around Miami, but it's not that bad. My wife and I have walked a couple of blocks from the hotel area to a restaurant for dinner and had no qualms about it. There are a number of decent restaurants within a very short driving distance. We will almost certainly be staying there again.

Hi Aqua Girl, I totally hear you about hotels in Miami being sketchy! I found that for the best hotels and best Miami Airport Parking is a great way to start! I hope this helps! Cheers, Lulu

We stayed one night in Sheraton Miami airport and it was the best airport hotel, we’ve ever stayed in. Had a so called club room, with free breakfast and a lounge with drinks and snacks. The pool area was really nice too. It’s situated just beside the car rental center. Free shuttle. Will definitely stay there again if we need a room in the area.

We are back from our trip and ended up spending 2 nights in Miami, one planned and one not. I wanted to thank everyone for their input as it was very helpful.
On our way down, we stayed at the Fairfield Inn and Suites - Miami Airport South. It was fine for our overnight stay - a typical Fairfield Inn. We didn't spend much time there as we arrived in the evening and left early the next morning. The neighborhood next to the Fairfield didn't look too bad to us, but we didn't go walking around. Perhaps it was worse when you left the immediate area around the Marriott complex. We used the shuttle to/from the airport and the ride was short.
On our way home from the islands, our flight landed 5 minutes late, then sat on the tarmac for 25 minutes. We got through Customs and Immigration quickly, then waited 45 minutes for our luggage. (This was a first for us. We have never waited that long at any airport.) By the time we picked up our checked bag and re-checked it for the Miami to DC flight, then raced for the gate, we had missed our connecting flight. Walked another 10 miles through the airport to a AA Service desk. (ok, a bit of an exaggeration, but at that time of night, it felt like 10 miles!). AA put us up at the nearby EB Hotel and gave us vouchers for food. Its a chain with hotels in Venezuela and Argentina. The rooms and lobby area were high-end and very nice. We enjoyed their breakfast buffet with our vouchers before going back to the airport. We would stay here again, although I hope to never have to stay overnight in-transit as it adds too much overhead to the trip!
