Now, I have to explain a couple of things. First, going on a vacation like this with Kristen (we became instant great friends when we worked together at the Chateau Restaurant in Waltham) is something we always talked about. In fact, next year we are renting a villa for two weeks with our husbands. We are going on Saturday and our husbands will be joining us the following Wednesday (hopefully, Mario and my daughters will also be joining us). As many of you women know, going away with a girlfriend is a great experience. But going to a place like the BVI, to us, was a dream come true. It was bittersweet because of the circumstances it came about, but nonetheless, was awesome. Second, Kristen is scared to death of flying, she becomes anxious and very sick. Driving in Tortola was very nausiating (is that how you spell it?). It wasn't until our third day (Saturday) that she thought that maybe she had motion sickness. She finally bought something similar to Dramamine and WOW, she stopped getting sick. She took it prior to our flight home and realized that her fear of flying wasn't a fear, but motion sickness. Anyway, on with our adventures.

I failed to mention that Kristen was on a mission to find "shrooms". Our first night we went to Bomba's and was told by the man himself that there were none because of the lack of rain. He couldn't fool us because a full moon party was happening in a couple of days and we would be on JVD so attending the party would present a problem. We decided to look for them ourselves, hence the reason we never made it to the beach before 1:00 PM. We started Friday morning and went up to Sage mountain where the path begins but we were not properly dressed for the hike (we had sandels on). But being the troopers that we are (and the good friend I am, because I could have cared less) we spent about 2 hours with no success. On Saturday, as I mentioned before, we went to Soper's Hole for breakfast, rented our snorkeling gear, and went to Brewer's Bay (but not before checking at Bomba's first, of course). Sunday morning we were to leave for JVD at 11 am but Kristen wanted to try our luck again but this time, wearing sneakers. Now another thing you have to understand is, Kristen LOVES to sleep in. She has two children, ages 4 and 10 months, (we will love her husband for a very long time for telling her she should go away with me because she deserves to go on vacation)

but her mission was much more important than sleeping. So, we get up at 7 AM, pack up and head for Sage Mountain. I had remembered from last year that there were cow fields around Sky View so we headed there. We got a little lost on the way but found a very nice woman on her way to church and she told us to follow her to Sky View. We parked the car and WOW!

We were in heaven!

We walked around for the next 3 hours. Even the bull didn't stop Kristen (although it did give her pause) but our quest did not produce anything, but we put the experience in a folder in our minds for next year with hopes that enough rain will produce the goods! We headed for WE to catch our ride to JVD but instead of going the way we came, I mistakenly took the long route thru Road Town. Oh, well, we were on Island Time, what can I say. Another thing I should mention is while we were at Smuggler's Cove, Kristen could not believe the beauty of this place and said "how can anything be more beautiful than this" and I commented, "just wait". One of our theme song for 10 days was "I'm in Heaven", which alway cracked us up because those three words were the only ones we knew, along with "the wealther in Boston is frightful, but Tortola is so delightful". I know, we were both 9 cents short of a dime. Whatever, but the feeling of being a kid, without the responsibilities of taking care of anyone (including or should I say especially our husbands, whom we love unconditionally, I might add) but ourselves, was overwhelming. We took turns being "all about me". We got along so unbelievably well. There was never a time during the ten days that either of us got on each others nerves. I don't know about the rest of you, but for us, that was a first. The "forced relaxation" was just what the doctor ordered. Ok, on to JVD. We finally got to the WE dock and our ride was waiting for us. The boat ride over was smooth and we got to Sandcastle around noon and was shown to our room. For anyone that has stayed at Sandcastle, we had room #2. It is the corner beach front, 2 room cottage. AWESOME! Kristen was starting to understand why I have such a hard time deciding where to stay when I go to the BVI. We changed into our bathing suits, immediately made drinks, (oh, by the way, I had Chef Steph provision Crow's Nest and supply us with our beverages, actually, the provisions were mostly beverages and we had brought noodles from home, which I highly recommend, especially for snorkeling). Sorry that I keep going back, but when I go to the next adventure, I remember prior aspects that I think are important to share. Anyway, back to White Bay. The weather was incredible! In the 10 days, other than a few squalls, we had no rain (not good for producing "shrooms", but great for the tan!). We lazed away on our noodles while singing "I'm in Heaven". A short time later our companions (we previously booked our trip with a couple we had met at Sandcastle two years ago and have kept in touch with since) arrived. Of course, we had to toast our reunion!

Kristen had brought a digital camera that not only took pictures, but also took one minute movies. That day was a "scotch night" for me. "Scotch night" is a term that was initiated two years before when my husband and I were staying at Sandcastle. In know that this report is lenghthy, but this is worth noting because we all have had "scotch nights". Usually after breakfast at Sandcastle, we set up our "work stations" on the beach. You know, 2 lounge chairs with a regular chair in between to hold the essentials. Then around 10 am, coctail hour begins. Well, usually we have the fruit drinks (one of the four food groups) till around 3 then take a nap, have a before dinner drink, wine and dine then a night cap. A "scotch night" is when my husband changes from fruit to scotch on the rocks around 1 or 2 PM, with no nap which doesn't happen that often but when it does, forgetaboutit!!!! I will go into this more under a heading of the funniest and most memorable moments on the BVI. Anyway, I didn't mean for it to be a "scotch night" it sort of snuck up on me. I don't remember much, but Kristen, being the friend that she is, took a few movies of the occasion to blackmail me later. I got a "little" loud during dinner, repeating myself (ME???) and singing with the Rolling Stones ("Start Me Up).

I can usually carry a tune, but she has evidence that I can sing off key but that didn't suppress my enthusiasm one bit. Entertainment was on me that night. Surprisingly enough, I had no hangover the next day. God is good! I will be back with more!!
