Does anyone have experience landing in Ft. Lauderdale and departing from MIA?
How much time would we need from the time we land in FLL to get to the gate in MIA?
We would probably get a taxi and do carry on only.
TIA

Honestly, why would you want to do that? Obviously, you're talking about booking separate tickets on two different airlines, which can be a real recipe for disaster. If you miss your first flight or your first flight is late, then you will be viewed as a NO SHOW on your second flight. This means that the airline has ZERO obligation to you, to get to your final destination. I have to assume it's cheaper, but to ME, no way it's worth it.

Sort of addressing the question, I personally would not do anything less than overnight. If you're just driving without stopping, with NO traffic, it takes approximately 35 minutes. Add in traffic, who knows?? Add in, deplaning from your first flight, getting all the way outside, getting a taxi, travel time to Miami, and then you have to go through TSA in Miami. WAAAY too much possible drama for me, for anything less than an overnight situation.

It’s about a 45 minute drive between FLL and MIA. A car service will run you around $130 to $150 and using Uber or Lyft will run you about $50.

Figure adding at least 20 minutes to deplane, exit the airport and get to your transportation, another 30 minutes to clear TSA at MIA and another 10 minutes to get to the departure gate. So a total of about 1 3/4 hours.

All that assumes your inbound flight arrives at the gate on-time, that’s are no traffic delays, and no backups at TSA. So even giving yourself 3 hours you’ll still won’t have much wiggle room.

I’m assuming you are considering doing this because you found a good airfare from your home airport to FLL but you have to ask yourself is the savings, after taking into account the cost of transportation between airports and the inconvenience you are causing yourself is worth it.

I live in Southeast Florida. The distance between the two airlports per se is probably around thirty miles...BUT.....Miami traffic is the worse traffic in the world. On a good day.....the travel time between the two airports can be had within a half hour....BUT......at other times it could take well over two hours. There is no rhyme or reason with Miami traffic. Mid morning can be herrendous. (sp) I personally have totally stopped using MIA to SXM. FLL is so much easier, and usually with Jet Blue...MUCH cheaper than American Airlines. The only reason i can think of why you want to fly to SXM from MIA would be you are using frequent flyer miles?? Even though it wasn't mentioned yet.....the return flight is a slam dunk easier and quicker through FLL...than MIA. Last few times coming back through FLL we were through the entire process within fifteen to twenty minutes.....vs the HOUR PLUS, and also the LONG WALK through MIA. If you decide to do the FLL then MIA route...make sure you give yourslef at least a four hour or more window. Good luck with the decision.

Thanks everyone for the information.
We have an unexpected obligation that we absolutely have to be home for and trying to salvage some of our vacation.

Ed--I would disagree that Miami traffic is the worst in the world, but it is bad, for sure..

I take it you've never been to Seattle/Tacoma area.

OK...i embellished the traffic situation as WORST in the world. OK....it may not be the worse...but Miami traffic, and all who have been stuck in it can probably agree...it SUCKS....period. smile the one thing to remember though...there is no rhyme or reason with it.....and when times you would think one would fly through it.....are the times I have been stuck the worse. wink

I was on the phone with someone that was in Miami and I was bitching about being stuck in traffic. Then I stopped, took a breath and apologized because I was actually moving on the highway when I know in Miami at that time of day, it would have been gridlocked. This was a drive that would normally take about 20 minutes. I was home in 35 ;-)
