I spoke briefly with Ruby Bute last evening. This was a distant relative of hers. Very sad but honestly, with what I witnessed on my recent trip, I am shocked there are not more serious accidents and deaths.

There was another motorcycle accident similar to this in front of the KFC in Cole Bay on Saturday. Just too many deaths on island happening in this manner. The cars were backed up on the road for hours Saturday morning!

We saw some crazy stunts by the two wheelers while we were recently there but I’d like to think that wasn’t the case in this particular situation. No drugs or alcohol and he had a helmet - and no mention of other rides with him fooling around. Sometimes, even when you’re doing everything the right way, bad things can happen.
Prayers for the family and friends of this young man.
Respectfully,
pat

I just don’t get it. We were driving through Marigot to Sandy Grown. These young men doing wheelies in traffic. So dangerous. Too bad someone doesn’t build a “dirt bike” park so they can ride and play and be safe. Maybe out by the old go cart place. To some of them the whole island is their play ground.

It is a thrill for them. Junior evil kanivle wannabes. Since most are in their early 20s or younger, I doubt they have a clue who Evel Knievel was or if he even existed since he died in 2007. It is a game with most of them and it appears there is no law enforcement that really cares to address the situation.

Police cars would seem to be useless in pursuit, due to the traffic. Arrest attempts, citations, fruitless. Education might be the only partial answer.

And "education" was a topic just a few weeks ago. I do not see it working, especially with the numbers that have been killed just this year.

I agree. They see the danger and the results and see it as even more of a challenge. And Cincinnati Kid is correct - police pursuit would be next to impossible, especially with so many unregistered, thus no tags. Someone else suggested a designated place for them to practice their stunts, rather than in traffic. It may help.

Evil Knievel was only an analogy but thanks for your insight of the age difference.

It sure seemed that way when we were on the island. Not really any problem other than on Sunday and mostly on the French side but I know they are a problem on both sides.

Having ridden a cycle up to 2 years ago, I do not at all get why they do what they do.
