I just wanted say thanks for the lists and all the other info here. I'm heading down to Moorings for my first ever charter and this stuff is more helpful than I can say. I have been to the islands many times but this is the first on a boat, my wifes 50th b-day to me. (She rocks!) Going down for 2/28/04. What a great contribution. I have been trying to make up my own check-out list and, after having seen this post for a long time, finally opened it. There was the answer to all my questions - literally!

The only two things I can think of to add are (1) clothes pins, sometimes there is a bag around, but they do come in handy for putting the laundry on the lifeline, and (2) request to see the last couple "squawk sheets" - not sure how many bases will actually do this but I think this is an important way to find out what has been happening to the boat.

Bill - Has anyone compiled a pre-flight checklist on common items brought down to the islands by the charterer?

Examples: Hand-held VHF, Handheld GPS, sailing knife, bug dope, sailing gloves, etc, etc..

I don't think so. I've seen some packing lists but nothing like you're talking about regarding boat stuff. I started to do a list once but realized I have so much stuff in a BVI Store-It box there that it's not practical to list. Since we don't have a boat here, it's great because there is at least 50 pounds of gear I don't haul back and forth. All I take home each trip is personal electronics.

Here is the one I modify each trip that is an accumulation of TTOL people's notes and my own...each trip I change it to apply and remove non needed things etc
A person could make it "generic" if desired, or I can if anyone likes

DO Before Departure:
--Luggage tags, include Moorings contact info in Tortola, and contract number
--Finalize and print:
- Pre-Charter Boat Checklist
- Sail Plan
- Contact phone numbers
- Air travel notes
--Call Verizon to get cell to work there *228?
--SCAN AND EMAIL PASSPORT, Drivers license, airplane itinerary, charge cards, and send to myself on MSN Mail.

-- Notify your credit card company that you are going on vacation and where you are going, so they do not think your card was stolen.

--Call Allstate re: coverage on 1) boat, 2) Rental car
1)Check with you own insurance company.
2)Check with your credit card company.
3)If the above is negative for both, buy the LDW/CDW from the rental company OR add it to your personal insurance policy so that the rental car is included. The latter may be cheaper than buying it from the car rental. If you want peace of mind, buy it from the rental company.
another thing to consider is what you are renting-4wheel drive is not always covered on ins. or cc-considered "off road". pays to ask a lot of questions and get it in writing.

I liked the "Take it" list. Thanks for that. 1 thing that I take with me almost everywehere is a polycarbonate water bottle (Nalgene) I carry it right on the plane. Go thru security with it empty and fill it from a drinking fountain near the gates. After leading Boy Scouts on hikes all over Texas, you learn to plan for hydration.

I also take it in the water while snorkeling. After a few accidental mouthfuls of salt water, it's nice to be able to get some fresh water. The only problem is that it once attracted a barracuda.

We're in the process of going thru all the last minute discounts that are popping up. Is there any difference between the Mooring, Footloose, Sunsail. Have sailed with Moorings 4 times before, but curious about the others.

Oh and thanks for the "Check Lists", just printed them to take home and compare.

They are all part of the same company now so they share common staff and maintenance. I think the only difference is the age and price of boats and possibly some more attentive service for top of the line Moorings customers.

That's interesting. I'm amazed at the 3 very different price quotes I recieved for a May trip. Do you know they would match prices by chance? I know I'll have to ask, but has anyone tried yet?

Getting three very different price quotes is exactly what I'd expect. Think of it this way. You have a parent company that owns Nordstrom's, J C Penny and WalMart. You go shop for a silk scarf and find they are $250, $95 and $45 respectively. Make sense?

Moorings is considered the top tier company with the newest nicest boats. Sunsail is a step down now with Footloose bringing up the bargain basement of older boats.
