Day 9 - It's Saturday. Thought it would be a good morn to go shop for some fill-in groceries before the new arrivals get here. Wrong. It was our first visit to Carrefour since their remodeling. They did a really nice job, New floors, new fresh produce displays, big difference. Pictures from our porch. Dinner tonight was at PIneapple Pete's Apparently taking pictures of food is not always a priority. This is a post-split, partially consumed Grilled Mahi dinner with beans and rice, and vegetables. And those who know us, Creme Brulee is ALWAYS on our menu at Pineapple Pete's. Asked owner about the report of food poisoning on Island from certain fish. PP imports almost all their fish from Miami. A long stop at Princess Casino. Betty even, Norm down only slightly.

Thanks for the report and the pics! Lots of boats out there!! Was it crowded at the grocery store, or there was lots of traffic getting there?

I question if it was food poisoning as reported and not the gastrointestinal bug that has been going around the island.

I had that. Lasted about six-eight hours. Semi-miserable and then you feel fine. Strange how fast it came and went.

Traffic was light. Parking lot filled+. Store didn't seem that crowded. All checkers working.

Good informative link. I would think fresh local caught fish available at markets would be more suspect while most served in restaurants are imported and fresh or flash frozen. Deep caught aren't as suspect. If not certain of where caught I would steer clear.

I hope you're right about that. I had planned to eat a lot of fish on our next trip but now not so sure. I'm limited to certain fishes as it is due to a bout of scombroid poisoning from fresh tuna so doc says no thick skinned fish.

Ciguetera has been around for the longest time. It is a fish intoxication due to some algae that produce a very strong toxin that is not destroyed by cooking.
I got it from a snapper that I caught myself, this was about 25 years ago. Believe me if you get it it will not pass in 6/8 hours. I was paralyzed waist up for a week had diarrhea for 5 days and for 1 year I could no eat seafood and drink alcholic beverages of any type.

Actually, I expect most of the good restaurants buy fresh locally. That's why you have to get to the fish markets early!

I would be very careful to find out where the fish was caught if buying locally caught fish.

Ciguetera toxin can be found in reef fishes. Doesn’t matter if flash frozen, locally caught, etc, it can be anywhere. Personally, I don’t eat grouper or snapper for that very reason.
