My wife and I found our dream boat ( Princess V40 - haven’t figured out yet how we’re going to pay for it) - and my wife is worried that we’ll have trouble finding marinas where we can dock it. She read somewhere that a lot of marinas don’t have slips for boats longer than 40’ and that such slips are scarce in general. Is this true? How much do we need to worry about this?

Not many marinas on the outer islands but no issues docking a 40' boat on Virgin Gorda or Tortola. Virgin Gorda has Leverick Bay and Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor. Tortola has quite a few but at the very least you have Soper's Hole, Nanny Cay, Village Cay, Manuel Reef, and several towards east end. Scrub Island has a nice marina but I don't know if they rent long term docks.
On Virgin Gorda in North Sound area there are several other "resort marinas" that are more transient in nature.
Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, Cooper, Norman, Salt do not have large permanent docks available.
