We had planned to go next Saturday for a week at the Westin. The pool us closed, the beaches are closed, tours have been suspended, people on the island are without work because if the govt closures. In your honest opinion should we cancel. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cloud.gif" alt="" />

If the pool at the Westin is closed why don't you check into Gallows Point. You may be able to get a last minute discount if you ask. They have a pool & a small beach. Also Frank Bay beach is within walking distance. Or find a villa with a pool if you need more room. Check with "Suite St. John". They manage units at Gallows as well as other properties and usually offer last minute discounts. Don't let the government shutdown make you not go.

My 2 cents would be the same whether you were going to St John USVI or MDI/Acadia NP Maine. Don't let the government shut down decide for you. Go, be an adventurer, a traveler, focus on locals to help you and guide you. I think as this goes on without resolution, people are going to become more adept at creating new opportunities within their impacted communities, and helping each other get through this cluster-F/. You could be scared away, which only adds insult to injury and puts more people out of work, or you could go knowing that your presence there actually is needed. Its all in the attitude of the traveler.
Honestly, is this Government shutdown THAT much different than being there and having a Tropical Wave/ Storm/Hurricane pay a visit ?

We came very close to booking at the Westin for the week after Thanksgiving but after surfing through their clunky website found the small print about the pool and restuarant being closed. I mean small print. We decided on Caneel Bay instead.

I'd avoid a resort that has a closed pool when that is their only pool. Might be worthwhile if their beach was spectacular, but the water is cloudy and the saltiest I've ever been in.
With the other beaches open, it may not be so bad now, but I'd still be annoyed with the pool being closed. Unless the rate was reduced because of it.
